Sleeping Beauty – The Dormition of Mary

I respect the young girl who was raped i.e. arranged marriage, to an old man, and then told by another ‘old man’ aka an ‘angel’ on behalf of an even older ‘man’ aka ‘God’ that she was having a special boy/son who was later called ‘the son of Man’ and even later ‘the Son of God’ and the baby was visited by ‘three Kings/Wise men’ (always the ‘three’). That poor girl her whole life and body was dominated by men, human and otherwise, and mansplaining. She had no chance, her existence was all planned out – if ‘he’ the chosen one, her son, was born knowing what would happen why choose to have his Mother’s life mapped out as well? He didn’t like how hard his life was/the direction in which it went and he knew in advance – both intentionally and unintentionally demonstrating that knowing something and go through it are two different things so why add to that and choose a girl who had no life/opportunity/choice at all? At least he could talk to God (or someone) and perhaps get an answer, she couldn’t at all as far as we know and it sounds like God or he and God (if they were even related in an immediate familial sense) picked a vulnerable/easily taken advantage of person to impose their plan(s) on. How nice. How good. Not. That is one of the types of innocent they were supposed to protect no? And no it wasn’t an honour or even an obligation/honour of duty as she may have seen it, she didn’t have a choice – she was a young girl she couldn’t make such big decisions herself let alone with informed, understood consent and she shouldn’t have had to – her choices were made for her. A child like the children in the world today who are married off and/or are children who have children and many of the rest of us in the world agree that even though it’s cultural we have moved on and/or we don’t like it/it’s not right and those who don’t mind are either of the ‘it’s not our children and there’s not much we can do about it so we don’t bother/just leave them to it’ mentality and those that want that kind of thing are deemed pedophiles.

‘The Feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus is celebrated by the most Christian denominations on August 06, 2017. Transfiguration is considered a major feast, numbered among the twelve Great Feasts in Orthodoxy. In all these churches, if the feast falls on a Sunday, its liturgy is not combined with the Sunday liturgy, but completely replaces it.

The Transfiguration is the second of the “Three Feasts of the Saviour in August”, the other two being the Procession of the Cross on August 1 and the Icon of Christ Not Made by Hand on August 16. The Transfiguration is preceded by a one-day Forefeast and is followed by an Afterfeast of eight days, ending the day before the Forefeast of the Dormition.

The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event reported in the New Testament in which Jesus is transfigured and becomes radiant upon a mountain. Jesus and three of his apostles go to a mountain (the Mount of Transfiguration). On the mountain, Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light, the prophets Moses and Elijah appear next to him and he speaks with them. Jesus is then called “Son” by a voice in the sky, assumed to be God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus.

In Christian teachings, the Transfiguration is a pivotal moment, and the setting on the mountain is presented as the point where human nature meets God: the meeting place for the temporal and the eternal, with Jesus himself as the connecting point, acting as the bridge between heaven and earth.

So even though I’m not Catholic or Christian I wouldn’t mind showing respect to this great female icon and I already have shown her recognition and sympathy by posting this and acknowledging this day two weeks ago but I don’t and didn’t need to fast even if I was of the necessary religious persuasion. Know why? I’m vegan and I fast/abstain more than that every day and I don’t even see it as fasting, vegans act every day for a better world via compassion to other creatures, the environment, human health and their own health. We don’t do too badly by the ethos of the New Testament do we. (Ha just recently I told a cleric I wasn’t going to have honey no matter what and outlined the reasons why even though it’s seen in many texts and science as a cure-all even in treatment for what I suffer from, so there. At first he was surprised and laughing but when I said I don’t laugh at his beliefs and it’s not funny he apologized, listened and quickly learned my ethos to be kind to all creatures great and small as something to be respected.)

The Dormition of the Mother of God (Greek: Κοίμησις Θεοτόκου, Koímēsis Theotokou often anglicized as Kimisis, Slavonic: Успение Пресвятыя Богородицы, Uspenie Presvetia Bogoroditsi) is a Great Feast of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches which commemorates the “falling asleep” or death of Mary the Theotokos (“Mother of God”, literally translated as God-bearer), and her bodily resurrection before being taken up into heaven. It is celebrated on August 15 (August 28, N.S. for those following the Julian Calendar) as the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Dormition not on a fixed date, but on the Sunday nearest August 15.

Dormition fast

The Feast of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week fast, referred to as the Dormition Fast. From August 1 to August 14 (inclusive) Orthodox and Eastern Catholics fast from red meat, poultry, meat products, dairy products (eggs and milk products), fish, oil, and wine. The Dormition Fast is a stricter fast than either the Nativity Fast (Advent) or the Apostles’ Fast, with only wine and oil (but no fish) allowed on weekends. As with the other Fasts of the Church year, there is a Great Feast that falls during the Fast; in this case, the Transfiguration (August 6), on which fish, wine and oil are allowed.

In some places, the services on weekdays during the Fast are similar to the services during Great Lent (with some variations). Many churches and monasteries in the Russian tradition perform the lenten services on at least the first day of the Dormition Fast. In the Greek tradition, during the Fast either the Great Paraklesis (Supplicatory Canon) or the Small Paraklesis is celebrated every evening except Saturday evening and the Eves of the Transfiguration and the Dormition.[1]

The first day of the Dormition Fast is a feast day called the Procession of the Cross (August 1), on which day it is customary to have an outdoor procession and perform the Lesser Blessing of Water.

Significance of the feast

In Orthodoxy and Catholicism, in the language of the scripture, death is often called a “sleeping” or “falling asleep” (Greek κοίμησις; whence κοιμητήριον > coemetērium > cemetery, “a place of sleeping”). A prominent example of this is the name of this feast; another is the Dormition of Anna, Mary’s mother. [My comment – remember Anna and Anna-Marie stem from Ishtar and Inanna.]

Up until the 5th century Church Fathers do not mention the Dormition of the Virgin and to the 6th century Dormition was not celebrated among the Christians as a holy day.[2]

For example, Epiphanius of Salamis, a Jew by birth, born in Phoenicia, converted to Christianity in adulthood and lived as a monk for over 20 years in Palestine with 335-340 for 362 years, writes in “Panarion” in “Contra antidicomarianst” about the death of the Virgin Mary following: “If any think [ I ] am mistaken, moreover, let them search through the scriptures any neither find Mary’s death, nor whether or not she died, nor whether or not she was buried — even though John surely traveled throughout Asia. And yet, nowhere does he say that he took the holy Virgin with him. Scripture simply kept silence because of the overwhelming wonder, not to throw men’s minds into consternation [my comment – I doubt it was out of wonder and/or respect, morelike patriarchy like some people’s gospels downplaying Mary Magdalene’s role]. For I dare not say — though I have my suspicions, I keep silent. Perhaps, just as her death is not to be found, so I may have found some traces of the holy and blessed Virgin.[3]” “The holy virgin may have died and been buried — her falling asleep was with honor, her death in purity, her crown in virginity. Or she may have been put to death — as the scripture says, “And a sword shall pierce through her soul” — her fame is among the martyrs and her holy body, by which light rose on the world, [rests] amid blessings. Or she may have remained alive, for God is not incapable of doing whatever he wills. No one knows her end. But we must not honor the saints to excess; we must honor their Master. It is time for the error of those who have gone astray to cease.[4]” Christians in the late 4th century had different opinions regarding Mary’s death; some believed that she was martyred. For this reason, Ambrose, for example, wrote: “Neither the letter of Scripture nor Tradition does not teach us that Mary had left this life as a consequence of suffering from bodily ulcers.”[5]

The events of the Dormition of the Virgin, and the burial of several known apocrypha: “Tale of the Dormition of the Virgin” Pseudo-John the Theologian (V emerged in the mid-century or later),[6] “De transitu Virginis Mariae” Pseudo-Melito of Sardis (5th century),[7] the composition of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, “According to John, Archbishop of Thessalonica.” One of these apocrypha placed in the “History of the Church” Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos.[8] All listed Apocrypha quite late (5th and 6th century) and differ from each other content.

Therefore, the Church was not taken all their content, but only the basic idea that the Virgin Mary blissfully rested and Her soul was adopted by her Son Jesus Christ at Dormition. According to Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos in his “History of the Church,” the emperor Maurice (582—602), issued an edict which set the date for the celebration of the Dormition – August 15.[9] After that Christians in the empire began to celebrate the death of the Virgin Mary. Patriarch of Jerusalem Modestus (630—632) preaching, said at this celebration, regrets the lack of specific information about the death of the Virgin Mary.[10] In Rome the feast called Dormitio Beatae Virginis set by Pope Sergius I (687-701), borrowed from Constantinople.[11]

According to later Catholic tradition, Mary, having spent her life after Pentecost supporting and serving the nascent Church, was living in the house of the Apostle John, in Jerusalem, when the Archangel Gabriel revealed to her that her death would occur three days later. The apostles, scattered throughout the world, are said to have been miraculously transported to be at her side when she died. The sole exception was Thomas, who had been delayed. He is said to have arrived three days after her death in a cloud above her tomb and to have seen her body leaving to heaven. He asked her “Where are you going, O Holy One?” and then she took off her girdle and gave it to him and said “Receive this my friend” then she disappeared.[12] Thomas was taken to his fellow Apostles and asked to see her grave so that he could bid her goodbye. Mary had been buried in Gethsemane, according to her request. When they arrived at the grave, her body was gone, leaving a sweet fragrance. An apparition is said to have confirmed that Christ had taken her body to heaven after three days to be reunited with her soul. Orthodox theology teaches that the Theotokos has already undergone the bodily resurrection which all will experience at the second coming, and stands in heaven in that glorified state which the other righteous ones will only enjoy after the Last Judgment.[13]

Dormition versus Assumption

The Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated on August 15 (August 28, N.S. for those following the Julian Calendar), the same calendar day as the Roman Catholic Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The Dormition and the Assumption are different names for the same event, Mary’s departure from the earth, although the beliefs are not necessarily identical.

The Orthodox Church specifically holds one of two Roman Catholic alternative beliefs, teaching that Mary died a natural death, like any human being; that her soul was received by Christ upon death; and that her body was resurrected on the third day after her repose, at which time she was taken up, bodily only, into heaven when the apostles, miraculously transported from the ends of the earth, found her tomb to be empty.[14]

While some Roman Catholics agree with the Orthodox that this happened after Mary’s death, others hold that she did not experience death and she was “assumed” into heaven in bodily form, just as her son Jesus ascended. However, Pope Pius XII alludes to the fact of her death at least five times, but left open the question of whether or not Mary actually underwent death in connection with her departure, in his Apostolic constitution, Munificentissimus Deus (1950), which dogmatically defined ex cathedra (i.e., infallibly) the Assumption.

On 25 June 1997 during a General Audience Pope John Paul II stated that Mary experienced natural death prior to her assumption into Heaven, stating:

It is true that in Revelation death is presented as a punishment for sin. However, the fact that the Church proclaims Mary free from original sin [my comment – sex though note that being raped and taken advantage of sexually in any way is still sex/sexual it’s not the victim’s fault and they are still innocent, perhaps even ‘innocent’ sexually in some people’s eyes too] by a unique divine privilege does not lead to the conclusion that she also received physical immortality. The Mother is not superior to the Son [my comment – was she not a chosen one as well? Who suffered and died not only for ‘God’/’his’ but for people as well?] who underwent death, giving it a new meaning and changing it into a means of salvation. Involved in Christ’s redemptive work and associated in his saving sacrifice, Mary was able to share in his suffering and death for the sake of humanity’s Redemption [my comment – ‘redemption’ nothing much has happened since has it? And the ‘second coming’ is supposedly about humanity’s ‘ascension’ – we haven’t even made up for any of our ‘crimes’ yet]. What Severus of Antioch says about Christ also applies to her: “Without a preliminary death, how could the Resurrection have taken place?” (Antijulianistica, Beirut 1931, 194f.). To share in Christ’s Resurrection, Mary had first to share in his death. The New Testament provides no information on the circumstances of Mary’s death. This silence leads one to suppose that it happened naturally, with no detail particularly worthy of mention. [My comment – seriously???] If this were not the case, how could the information about it have remained hidden from her contemporaries and not have been passed down to us in some way? [My comment – It’s called selective storytelling or truth telling, his-story and patriarchy, religious/culture ommission.] As to the cause of Mary’s death, the opinions that wish to exclude her from death by natural causes seem groundless. It is more important to look for the Blessed Virgin’s spiritual attitude at the moment of her departure from this world. In this regard, St Francis de Sales maintains that Mary’s death was due to a transport of love. He speaks of a dying “in love, from love and through love”, going so far as to say that the Mother of God died of love for her Son Jesus (Treatise on the Love of God, bk. 7, ch. XIII-XIV). Whatever from the physical point of view was the organic, biological cause of the end of her bodily life, it can be said that for Mary the passage from this life to the next was the full development of grace in glory, so that no death can ever be so fittingly described as a “dormition” as hers.”[15]

Both views agree that she was taken up into heaven bodily. The specific belief of the Orthodox is expressed in their liturgical texts used of the feast of the Dormition.[14]

The Eastern Catholic observance of the feast corresponds to that of their Orthodox counterparts, whether Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Orthodox.

So being a pure being, Mary was ressurected like Jesus? Mary in relation to Ishtar/Inanna i.e. Venus (Venus the planet and Venus/Aphrodite) the Morning Star? Ishtar/Inanna are goddesses of a race(s) which isn’t always known for dying but when they do so it’s usually dramatic and can involve resurrection or at least metaphor for death an ressurection e.g. the decent into the underworld/netherworld giving up mortal ‘trappings’ such as sexuality and clothing/graces facing the Dark Mother, seven levels and then ascent. Obviously by the time they became Mary ‘Mother of [a] Christ’ (the earlier and longest lived in history ‘Christ’ in history being Krishna – and the fact that he (avatar of Vishnu), Shiv[a] and Brahm[a] are not the be all and end all nor absolute creators in Hinduism or even pre-Vedic Hinduism, they’re not creators at all and at times of extreme distress usually of their own making call forth and pretend to pay tribute to the Mother of all Lalit[h]a – she is above all of the Hindu Mother Goddesses, she was there first*) came along the sensuality, sexuality, aggressiveness and cleverness of Ishtar/Inanna/Venus/Aphrodite was turned into the perfect innocent (but still typically a rape victim – many goddesses and divine females suffer rape) non-sexual free of ‘sin’ being even though she was married and even though ‘God’ choosing to use her baby to either be or be possessed by another ‘soul’/character (later commonly known as ‘Jesus’).

Either way kudos to her, she had it tough.

 

P.S. Interestingly enough as per the Gregorian calendar August 15 [1947 after WWII] is the anniversary of the Independence of India – the oldest still living Mother Goddess (though twisted/morphed version) culture.

 

*Ancient gods and God herself are written/told to spend much of their time sleeping (‘dormition’/asleep), dreaming and breathing/meditating – the breath of/or brahma i.e. the inwards and outwards motion of breath is the same as the movement of the universe and creation predominantly our galaxy towards and outwards from its centre and the Maya is the illusion/dream/barrier/veil between creation and potential or dreaming and waking, truth and lie. Creation/existence as we know it is seen as a dream perhaps even a daydream or forced dream and part of the or a cycle of breath of God.

Cow Appreciation Day

Ironically a b*tch (sans her twin sister) called me an “obnoxious cow” last night. Thank you I feel true kinship to and admire cows, unlike to a lowlife like you.

Funnily enough the site engineers where I live in the ‘Solent’ were freaked out last year when Mum and I would stop to talk to the cows this site bought to use after we moved in. As usual the cows came from throughout the field to be near us instead of ignoring us like they do most people, if only the people here would do that. The site engineers always make a point of stopping and/or highlighting their presence like on Monday when we were returning and one of them was just sitting within sight of the entrance/exit on his vehicle, started it up as soon as he saw us, went all of approx 2 metres, stopped, dismounted and stared licentiously at us the whole way to our residence.

When they do allow the cows in the field behind us nowadays, groups stand behind our caravan and call, especially when we’re asleep. Wonderful, beautiful creatures.

On this planet everything and everyone is an asset, we all a property reference; and what’s the ‘best’ method for resources? “Waste not, want not” of course and if its ‘best practice’ then as long as a bunch of companies do it it makes it harder to change because if ‘they/so many’ do it it must be ok/apparently better regulated.

Cows represent the giving without taking nature of motherhood, though in practice this has gone too far.

Kamadhenu – कामधेनू (Sanskrit) [from kama desire, wish + dhenu milk cow]

Kamadhenu (Sanskrit: कामधेनु Kāmadhenu), also known as Surabhi (सुरभि Surabhī), is a divine bovine-goddess described in Hindu mythology as the mother of all cows.

Kamadhenu or Kamaduh is the sacred cow, who is regarded as the source of all prosperity in Hinduism. Kamadhenu is regarded as a form of Devi (the Hindu Divine Mother) and is closely related to the fertile Mother Earth (Prithvi), who is often described as a cow in Sanskrit. The sacred cow denotes “purity and non-erotic fertility, … sacrificing and motherly nature, [and] sustenance of human life”.

Kamadhenu, the mother of cattle who is also sometimes described as a Matrika (“mother”) goddess.[3] Other proper names attributed to Kamadhenu are Sabala (“the spotted one”) and Kapila (“the red one”).[4]

The cow symbolizes the dharma itself. It is said to have stood steadily upon the earth with its four feet during the Satyayuga (world’s first age of truth), upon three feet during the Tretayuga (the second stage of less than perfection), upon two feet during the Dwaparayuga (the third stage of dwindling and disappearing perfection) and only on one leg during Kaliyuga (the fourth and current age of decadence).

Note: Remember that part of the meaning of Lalita who is the Divine Mother ‘Devi’ is ‘Red’.

As a form of the Devi she originally had the proper naming style which included one of the Devi’s names, her name originally being Dhenu Ambika (Cow of Ambika – Ambika being a name of Lalita) but as usual over time with streamlining and downgrading the status of the the cow goddess, cows in general and the hiding and replacing of the Divine Mother in the public eye, the name was changed with the Divine Mother’s name removed and the ‘kama’. The name should be Dhenu Ambika. In Bengali the name is Gomata or Gaumata (depending on the dialect/transliteration). Go/Gau-Mata = Cow + Mother, aka Mother Cow.

Cows in general are seen as symbolic or the children of Dhenu Ambika and hence are supposed to be sacred, not prayed to directly but in association with the Divine Mother and her forms.

Dhenu Ambika was an amazingly powerful and benevolent being but is pretty much seen as a cornucopia to be taken for granted and used continually like trying to trick a genie in a bottle to constantly grant all wishes and desires. She is an integral part of various religions in various forms which I will outline later on but unfortunately has become ‘the gift that keeps on giving’/being taken from. Typical of the choosing of ‘gods’ and deities to pray to really but given much less respect and homage than the most popular ones people pray to and pray to mostly for reasons of wishing for prosperity, money/wealth, good fortune, fertility and longevity before/over protection, comfort strength, wisdom usually associated with mother goddesses (though the well known, current so-called mother goddesses were/are not directly associated with the Devi, they are replacement consorts for the usurping pantheon).

According to the story of her first known appearance She emerged from the ocean or sea of milk (Kshira-Sagar) an ocean described as made from/under direct jurisdiction of the Moon Cow. She emerged whilst the ‘gods’ and ‘demons’ of the time were playing tug-o-war and churning the ocean desperately trying to get power and be the strongest. The sacred cow appeared and was ‘won’ by the ‘gods’ who then somehow thought they could present her to ‘the seven sages’ and then most notably became the possession of sage Vasishta. The churning of the ocean of milk is described as a cosmic battle hence implying a war in space or other dimension and they were fighting specifically over/for Soma/the elixir of life later known as Ambrosia (there’s actually a dairy brand called Ambrosia).

Note: It is said the ‘gods’/deities were created from/born of the soma – soma being the primordial blood/dark matter hence connected to the Mother Goddess but as shown above also to the ocean of milk. Blood, particularly menstrual blood and milk have a significant correlation (humans are said to be made from moon clay) and the children of it fought for control over it and it’s source the Divine Mother and everything/one directly associated with Her.

Soma was produced by the churning of the primal sea (Kali’s ‘ocean of blood’ or sometimes ‘sea of milk’). Or Soma was secreted by the Moon-Cow. Or Soma was carried in the ‘white pot’ (belly) of Mohini the Enchantress. Or the source of Soma was the moon. Or from Soma all the gods were born. Or Soma was the secret name of the Mother Goddess and the active part of the ‘soul of the world’.

Dhenu Ambika apparently had a daughter called Nandini (the masculanized versions/bulls are currently seen as pets for two of the modern father-trinity and seen as clumsy but powerful comic side-characters) who was also given to a sage to give him and his friends to live off of.

Further on she is described as bearing many golden cows called Kapila cows, who were called the mothers of the world, mother of all cows. The later you go into texts though things get more convoluted which the current high ‘gods’ claiming they made her and other versions who they’ve also called the mother of cows, buffaloes and horses; one even says a supposed lesser creator deity (not of the current faux trinity) made her after he drank soma from the ocean of milk. So where did he get the soma from to make her when it and the milk comes from her? Chicken and egg anyone? The later you go into the ‘stories’ the more and more of her children are given away and used for things people use cows and bulls for including heavy labour/work and battle. Yeah people, giving away and pimping others is not good. Being a parent and/or custodian/guardian/having a ward doesn’t mean ownership over the body/mind/soul of them. Having children or obligations/duties in the forms of dependents is an allowance with limits, something that has been given (or not in many cases in this world where its forced, tricked, expected), some call it a blessing (though there’s division over that between people who think beings on Earth and perhaps elsewhere have been tampered with and those who believe in evolution and/or direct creation via modern religions) and acting like they’re assets/property (the same goes for treating women/wives as something to be owned) is both sacriligeous and unethical.

‘Bhumi Devi’ or ‘Mother Earth’ is symbolised as a cow in the Vedic tradition, as just like the earth, the cow is an endless giver of resources and nourishment.

‘The cow is a mother to mankind whom we should love, respect and protect. Her milk sustains the life of many species, including humans. Her dung provides fuel and bricks for millions of rural families across the Asian countries. Her urine is medicine for the sick. When she dies her skin provides us warmth and protection through clothing.’

How convenient.

So the idea of using, abusing, skinning, crushing, siphoning, consuming generally or downgrading by moving the creature away from it’s original self/look by calling it ‘meat’ and eating a symbol of your mother and furthermore the Divine Mother doesn’t make you want to throw up? Cannibalism at it’s ‘best’. I’ve come across quite a few people who can’t cook ‘meat’ themselves, who can’t bring themselves and/or are disgusted/repelled by the look of a carcass and then some of them can’t eat it if still looks like a body part on their plate i.e. they need it carved up for them into slices. If your mind is giving off such strong warning triggers, don’t ignore them.

Cows live anything but a nice life in India let alone the world, even back when Hinduism was the significant majority religion there (and pre-partitioned Bangladesh and Pakistan). Just because we see some wandering about stopping traffic or apparently doing their own thing doesn’t mean much when you think about how much it takes to provide society with what it wants. Any type of farming/cultivation takes an almost incomprehensible amount of space and amount of ‘source item’ e.g. the animal necessary as well as sustenance and output, to produce what people want. Dairy farming like poultry and any other animal farming is horrific, and ‘free range’ is anything but ‘free”. People seem to have fanciful ideas about animals being treated better than humans and making up things like comfortable, air conditioned, constantly fed and attended to transportation and luscious Green fields etc, baby chicks can be sent like any inanimate object in a parcel to small scale/home human breeders/rapists and so many are dead and crushed and the live ones in terrible shape by the time they reach their destination. Whether normal battery style or ‘free’ they are forced to breed over and over until they can’t any more and then their bodies are used for countless bi-products in consumer items and what happens to the male calves? Ha, sold off for beef and the other ‘items’ from their flesh, bones, blood, organs, dung etc that the female cows get sent off for after being thoroughly abused and worn out. Nothing sacred about that. Even ‘family cows’ who’ve done their ‘service’ and die are used as a resource afterwards, anyone else eat and use their family members/pets/friends after death?

Previously and perhaps still in some places oxen and bulls were used as sacrifices to the ‘gods’ and then they were eaten by the people… Yeah… So whilst the males were used to rape cows (as is done world over and for all species in this obsessed ‘buy a baby whenever we feel like it’ for pets and using animals for everything or rape to ‘conserve’ world) they were also sacrificed. So holy and devout. Ritual sacrifice is so damned stupid and twisted, whether it be animal/human or plant – it’s like the question ‘what do you give someone (you like) who has everything?’ The answer to that of course is sincere friendship, commitment, appreciation etc all those nice adjectives – but what do people do? They breed, use and hack down the beloved creations of said creator and offer them up on a plate for the creator to supposedly enjoy and metaphysically feast on before then eating it themselves, heck can’t let it go to waste can they especially once it’s been touched by the ‘god’ damn they’ll get even more blessing out of it then. Like Hindus looking down on thinking of menstruating girls/women as dirty (and not allowed to attend/carry out pujas-prayer rituals/go to temple) yet they’re obsessed with wearing the Red powder on their heads which represents menstrual blood and they particularly covet the statues that apparently ‘bleed’ by themselves.* Sickos and psychos. That’s using the Creator as a fount, not giving thanks or worship but then again the people are just copying (like that’s an excuse) their lesser deities who did/do the exact same thing. Those guys – both the so-called deities and the obvious demons – can even demonstrate extreme devotion and prayer for mind boggling periods of time all for the sake of boons and forgiveness and then turn right round and call themselves all-mighty, the Creator, and go on a rampage. Over and over again. Seriously the Divine Mother has been waaaay too forgiving in his-story/scripture and that’s going back far enough to even really notice Her since history (once the Vedas came into it – the ar*ehole deities got the knowledge/specifics/technical info on creation and life, and made Earth into ‘Hell’/prison planet) does a apt job of hiding, omitting and downgrading Her. The pack mentality behind ritual sacrifice reminds me of pilgrimages – people are apparently on a holy journey to visit special places and show how pure they are or to be cleansed and then what often happens? Stampede. Crushing those ahead, stamping over, pushing/shoving, not giving a damn, being so desperate to touch a building or get near a high up priest is so holy, not.

*Note: Interestingly enough the powders – sindoor (the toxin laden one) and kumkuma (the natural one) are used in the oppression/repression of women of whom many think it traditional and their duty so continue with it. Sindoor is the one traditionally used on women (surprise surprise given the risky ingredients it’s made of) to signify they’ve been bought/sold, sorry ‘married’, and are fertile – full of life and colour. Then if they are widowed (since divorce is sooo unlikely and heck they aren’t really burned alive with the corpse of the husband anymore though many are again sold/married off to the husband next male kin if he had any since it’s awful for a girl/woman to have independence and she’d be seen as a burden on her family otherwise) they go through elaborate rituals to remove the sindoor showing that losing the husband means the girl/woman is now barren and lost her life force (unless the family marry her off again of course, so her vitality is based on their choices). Such women use sindoor everyday and the extra traditional ones also wear a nose ring and toe rings (how much ‘joining’ by marriage symbols do they need – taking it to the point of shackles, seriously it’s not the wife that represents ‘the ball and chain’ and nose rings in this context can be likened to rings unnecessarily put in animal noses so they can be chained). Kumakuma (representing the chakras/energy vortices) however is worn by men and women after attending temple rituals rather than home ones, how ‘lucky’ for the guys.

Just because the Mother/Cow/Earth has so much richness in her being doesn’t mean you’re supposed to take it apart as a resource and make it into a corporation. There’s a difference between being looked after, having what you need, given by the parent and falling into the universal sins of greed, lust, envy, gluttony etc and further being power hungry and addicted. Heck some people drink the blood directly they’re so damned greedy and desperate for what it confers, cow’s blood (and milk) being related to human female blood especially menstrual blood as described HERE in significance.

The lives of the very gods were dependent on the miraculous power of menstrual blood. In Greece it was euphemistically called the “supernatural red wine” given to the gods by Mother Hera in her virgin form, as Hebe. The root myths of Hinduism reveal the nature of this ‘wine’. At one time all gods recognized the supremacy of the Great Mother, manifesting herself as the spirit of creation (Kali-Maya). To this day, clothes allegedly stained with the GOddess’s menstrual blood are greatly prized as healing charms. W.R. Smith reported that the value of the gum acacia as an amulet “is connected to the idea that it is menstruous blood, i.e., that the tree is a woman.” For religious ceremonies, Australian aborigines painted their sacred stones, churingas, and themselves with red orche, declaring that it was really women’s menstrual blood.

The same elixir of immortality received the name of amrita in Persia. Sometimes it was called the Milk of the Mother Goddess, sometimes a fermented drink, sometimes sacred blood. Also hypocritical that the so-called modern divine trinity and their consorts/family are seen as the be all and end all, the top of the Hindu hierarchy yet all the gods are believed to reside in the body of Dhenu Ambika (the ancient Egyptians believed the same and later Greeks continued to as well).

Why is that? Because they came from the Mother who is of course greater than them and reside within her cosmic body/space. They did not make Her or Her forms.

Another hypocrisy in modern post-vedic/post-diluvian Hinduism is that Dhenu Ambika is often associated with the Brahmin caste aka priest class, whose wealth she symbolizes. Hmmm. A reason why the streamlined version of Hinduism aka Buddhism (the belief system that egotistical Indian prince spread when he decided things were about to get too tough for him after a lifetime of taking advantage of all his privileges and of which he effectively become god/top of later on) worked/works so well is that it does away with the obvious caste system based on reincarnation. [*1] Brahmins and Brahminis [*2] are not supposed to be wealthy in a material sense yet because of the caste system of which they sit atop – they often are and you don’t get rich by being nice (unless you win the lottery) let alone stay rich enough to keep it in a family/obsession with longevity and the descendents of course get less and less visually pious. A whole caste is made up of much more than the poor priests who walk around with the clothes on their back, a walking stick and a food bowl.

*1 – Reincarnation also being a ‘modern’ construct, an excuse for life being made so shitty here and a reason for well off people to tell others they haven’t earned better. It’s also the lack of explanation for what death really is, particularly difficult to explain in virtual reality, so instead we have a soul society who get recycled.

Cows were often gifted to Brahmins and like ‘cattle’ in general were/are seen as stock/assets (heck we’re all seen as livestock on this planet and numbers or ‘useless eaters’/consumers) and milk/milk products (milk, curds, ghee/butter), urine and dung are used for pujas – this is apparently seen as pure, good and prosperous for the family. The products of forcing the family cow to pregnancy over and over is seen as a good, holy, wealth aka ‘happiness’ giving thing. Of course to keep this practice is maintained as pujas and sacrifice cannot technically be carried out without milk products – vicious cycle.

Cows are ‘given’ a one day holiday every year – the ‘pet’/family used and small scale owned ones anyway, do you honestly think the big farmers/traders/companies would lose precious profit doing so other than perhaps a token one or few for show – where the cows are washed and decorated (how nice for them) in temples and given offerings for the wish of them continuing to produce. Twisted much? They’re not even giving thanks/appreciation for the cows, they’re bloody hoping for more to come, like they’re not going to force it anyway – they’re really celebrating their own behaviour and hoping to continue getting away with/doing it. And one day off a year!?! Ha and I thought modern working annual leave was stingy. Hence I’m not writing in regards to that celebration which is scheduled for Halloween this year in line with Divali, I’m writing today as it’s world Cow Appreciation Day.

The most famously known is Hathor, a goddess of many forms and directly connected to Isis, Inanna, Astarte and of of course Dark Mother Kali.

Hathor was often shown in cow form or like Isis depicted with cow horns on her crown (the horns also representing the crescent moon and menstrual blood) and sun disk in the centre. She is also associated with the constellation Taurus. She is known as the Divine Sky Cow. Her form Hesat is her earthly manifestation. As Hesat she carried and nourished the ‘gods’ from wet-nursing/mothering to everything else they considered nourishment and her milk was said to be the ‘beer of Hesat’ (note the blood-milk-soma-ambrosia-mead connection).

Hathor comes from the earlier ‘Mht wrt’ (meaning ‘Great Flood’ – ancient Egyptian doesn’t have vowels, it’s a guttural ‘dead language’ that we can only guess how it was spoken) who was a cow mother goddess.

Another early cow mother goddess was Bat (Ba = part of the soul) that Hathor took over from and both her and Nut are also associated with the sky and Milky Way (ocean of milk anyone?) Bat was rarely depicted but when found was shown as human female with bovine features such as horns and ears. I would say eyes but all the Egyptian and Hindu goddesses have beautifully drawn/accentuated eyes and cows in general have beautiful eyes too. (Sidenote – the later Greek goddess Hera was known as the ‘oxen eyed’ though not associated with cows other than that.)

The great Old Goddess of Ireland was the Cailleach Bhéara, or Hag of Béare in Munster. She “existed from the long eternity of the world.” [cite] A woman of Tiree once asked the Cailleach how old she was. She replied that she remembered when the Skerryvore rocks were fields where barley was farmed and when the lakes were little wells. This cailleach was named Boí, “Cow,” a title she shared with Bóind and other ancient Irish goddesses. Her name was cow but she was the Crone/Dark Mother and was known for having a magical cow that many coveted, so direct relation but a separate being like the cow being a form of the Devi.

In Ireland there were several ancient cow goddesses, some like Dil and Damona, who both ruled over fertility, but about whom little is known today.

Then there is Bo Find, who manifested as a white cow. She transformed Ireland from a barren land into a green and fertile one. She came from the Western Sea with her sisters Bo Ruadh, the red cow goddess and the black cow goddess, Bo Dhu. Their different colours represented the different phases of the moon.
The sisters all went to different parts of the island. Bo Find went to the centre where she gave birth to a male and female calf. These twins were to provide food for the people by giving milk and ploughing the earth. Their work done, the cow sisters then departed back to the sea.

Another goddess was Anu who was a guardian of cattle and health. Fires were lit for her in midsummer and her priestesses sang the dying to sleep.

Brigit was a Celtic mother goddess to many European tribes. Some suggest her name came from the Sanskrit word brihati, an epithet of the divine. She was a goddess of regeneration and abundance and her protection was said to be very great. She was seen with a pair of oxen called Fea and Feimhean.

As Christianity began to grow Brigit, also known as Bride, was transformed into a popular saint. Legend says her mother was carrying a pitcher of milk when she was born and the infant was bathed in it. She was unable to eat ordinary food and was reared on the milk of a white, red-eared cow. This was a special animal with links to the otherworld in Celtic mythology. The companion animal of the adult saint was said to be a cow, who gave her all the milk she required.

The public respect cows so much that milk/dairy products are not seen as luxury ‘goods’ and demand the cheapest possible price for them, cheaper than junk food except when they are made into things like highly sought after cheeses and chocolate, which doesn’t taste half as good nor anywhere near as nourishing as simply made or raw chocolate imo. Reminds me of places in ‘third world’ oh wait ‘developing’ countries (aka stripped to the point of absolute poverty) where certain fizzy drinks were produced and were so cheap they were practically on tap and far more easily available/accessible than clean water – wonderful for the people eh, so lucky. Then in some ‘modern-first/developed world’ countries promotional tactics of companies like Coca-Cola used to tell people to feed their babies with their product to ensure their social well being aka popularity and not being picked on. Similar to the days in Western countries where gin was practically on tap though ‘soft’ drinks weren’t outlawed or restricted at any point.

The word ‘cow’ and even ‘holy cow’ like the feminzation of many words is used as an insult.

When we see cows and all animals that are used for consumer goods, ‘sport’ (though hunting, baiting and freak/circus/carnival/road shows shouldn’t be called sports as ‘sport’ implies that the participants have agreed to play fully understanding the rules and that they are fair) to display pieces in pet shops and zoos we are overcome with sadness. Humans have truly become a vampiric species taking it beyond blood and psychic vampires.

Wonder Woman, Warrior Princess, the Daughter

Sidenote moan – the summers here in sunnyland (not the real name) can be annoying, you know how people randomly space themselves out in places like beaches, parks, toilets, public transport so they can have a bit of privacy even if they’re close together? Well last year a bunch of commercial class vans set up a formation right behind us on the land behind us & our neighbours whereas everybody else was nicely spaced out. Also the back hedgerow was and still is cut down behind us only and not the neighbours so visitors behind and people at the front can look right through. Reminds me of the daffodils that kept getting their heads chopped off in front of us but no one elses. Sidenote note – we saw a lot of Spring blooms in Winter last year, t’was pretty.

Ok, when it comes to US comic book heroines (mainly from DC and Marvel) one of the oldest and most famous heroines is Wonder Woman ‘Warrior Princess’ and does it surprise me that she is the most famous and one of the most well thought out? No. She is the archetypal Daughter and everybody wants the Daughter’s favour because that apparently implies having the Mother’s blessing and not having the Dark Mother as the enemy. The problem is the story is always manipulated and abused.

In Wonder Woman Diana is the Daughter and a ‘First’ figure, not a normal birth made from clay by the Mother Hippolyta the Amazon Queen and like Pandora (Dor-, Dora, Dorothea, Dorothy, Dolly), Diana is blessed by many of the pantheon. The Dark Mother was added later as Diana’s younger sister Troia (the triplicate) Darkstar who does not feature so much in this story but is reincarnated later as a Mother/Dark Mother morph in Xena: Warrior Princess (and Gabrielle the Daughter), whose history with the gods is similar to that of Hippolyta. The writers made sure to differentiate a little by saying that Xena was not an Amazon, however she was an honorary one and Gabrielle later received the title as their Queen albeit temporary, it was also through Gabrielle that Hope was born after she was raped in Britain/Britannia by the new monotheistic One God. Hope is later a lover of Ares and bears ‘the Destroyer’ (a monster son, like that forced on Hippolyta by Ares), after their death the Furies try to bring about the death of Xena’s daughter Eve. It is a horribly, horribly twisted story, and remember it has its roots in India which was then (historically and disputed by some Indian scholars) thought to be invaded/corrupted by a Northern influence, following the changes in Egypt and Mesopotamia. Xena’s chakram is an Indian weapon, the first one referenced as a weapon of Indian gods and being one of a pair: Light and Dark, the Dark one stolen by Ares from a masculine god called Kal but as we know the Greaco-Roman cultures are copies and morphs of what was there before and the root Dark Goddess is Kali, and Ares gave that chakram to Xena, the Dark Mother figure of the story. Her second chakram is a united dual yin-yang version. Even the title for the Daughter i.e. ‘Princess’ is ‘Kar’ or ‘Kaur’ in Indian, and the root Indo-Iranian ‘Kar-‘ make, build, war – can be used for warrior (in this case that would read amazon), a middle name many Indian females have.

Wonder Woman as a Graeco-Romanized version and includes the Persephone story where the Daughter is separated from her Mother, that is a version of the older Ishtar and Inanna story. Covering all bases the ‘creators’ of Wonder Woman based her Mother’s home on Paradise Island, a direct rip off of the island/home of the Creator Divine Mother Devi Lalita and the Sri Yantra (all the old goddesses combined in one geometric mandala/pagoda which has been changed to include modern gods and goddesses). Lalitha is both the creator of the universe/multi-verse and all beings/bodies as well as the uni/multiverse it/themselves (the formed and formless way of explaining). Whilst the Sri Yantra represents all the goddess forms together and separate, it is also a vehicle. In some depictions the throne consists of the corpses of the invading and current pantheon of Hindu gods – so it is prophetic, the dark star system (Nibiru et al) being the throne of the goddess. The ‘children’/creation/workers conquered/tricked/deceived the Mother but their end is foretold/already decided.

As usual to come into the modern/Vedic world the feminine is masculanized in some way, so Diana the Princess becomes Diana Prince as her alias in the USA, the US being one big mesh of ancient Egyptian to later Graeco-Roman symbolism. Diana’s creation is also changed into a human style birth in later versions of Wonder Woman, fathered by Zeus, following deception, drugging and rape of Hippolyta and the Amazons by Hercules and his men orchestrated by Ares (when Hippolyta had wanted peace); and as usual later on Zeus also wants to rape the Daughter Wonder Woman. In the Wonder Woman story, after this massive defeat and degradation half of the Amazon population move to a fictional location in the Middle East. The is the conquering of the root Goddess/Feminine by the later God/Patriarchal culture. The father raping the daughter, and indeed continued practice of some ‘religious’ and magic practitioners as my Mother was after she was brought to Britain to be brutalised and enslaved as a child – a Living God where the family believed through her suffering and purity/good behaviour they would also benefit – very Christ like (again an Indian term) where the innocent is sacrificed/used by the many thinking they can be forgiven/redeemed that way – is constant in old/changeover cultures such as Ares being the father of Hippolyta in Amazon legend.

In at least one of the few matrilineal societies in India the inheritance goes to the youngest daughter who is supposed to act as caretaker to the rest (in practice of course older children are substitute parents) but by caretaker they mean the benefactor of the spoils; in our case the children of Mum’s generation were named after historical ages of creation and humanity via the divine god and concept names (similar to how the Wonder Woman saga is split into ages/yugas; Gold, Silver, Bronze, Modern) and after the suffering of the eldest the ‘victor’ is the youngest – my Mum used to be told how her youngest sister got wonderful things for her wedding and would be happy etc whilst Mum was forced and manipulated into marriages and got nothing. So us eldest born have all the sh*t and the youngsters are supposed to reap, just as Mum and I have almost always been poor whereas others had benefits like learning to drive, jobs of their choosing, property. My Mother was told when she wanted to drive “if you learned to drive, you could go anywhere and we’d lose you” amongst many of the things she’s been told in her life like a mason stranger asking her to “give us Mars” and “we want to sell shares in you” (as if they haven’t already been taking pounds of flesh/stocks in the life/energy). Some masons took it upon themselves to start calling me Christina, the Divine Child, the Princess in the Pyramid, and prior to all that there was a random group of people who stopped me on a Valentine’s Day outside where we lived and asked me to be their ‘Pandora’, although a similar thing happened in New Orleans previously. Interesting enough in December 2012 the the ‘First Born’, the first child, son, of Hera and Zeus was added to the Wonder Woman story as Diana’s enemy and again copying the Lalita Indian culture – the prophecy surrounding the ‘First Born’ was that he would sit on his father’s throne with his family’s corpses around him. The use of Diana vs First Born reflects similar customs of the ‘dark’ and ‘light’ child in some Asian societies where the ‘dark’ is seen as negative and the ‘light’ positive, the ‘light’ usually being the privileged child who has the fun, prestige and honour; this yin yang symbolism is even more poignant if first borns are used and their birthdays solstices.

The story is ingrained in people, people are their stories whether they know it or not and there are people who go to lengths to keep the stories and the lines going (powerful bloodlines consider themselves god and god/alien descendents), the storytellers e.g. media and education keep them in the cultural consciousness too, adapting to the times. You don’t have to know these people to be affected by them but typically children are sold out/groomed by people in their lives.

Much twisting was utilized to include the Mother-Daughter story into the cradles of civilization and it morphed from herstory to history even more when eventually it became a tool for US American patriotism and using the ‘love’ angle to pair/confuse/distract the Goddess with an entirely unsuitable ‘partner’ to keep Her in place especially when the Goddess doesn’t mate. Steve couldn’t have any better than Diana, whereas she could have much better. She never should have left the Aegean Sea let alone by herself.

The Surprising Origin Story of Wonder Woman
The history of the comic-book superhero’s creation seven decades ago has been hidden away—until now

“Noted Psychologist Revealed as Author of Best-Selling ‘Wonder Woman,’” read the astonishing headline. In the summer of 1942, a press release from the New York offices of All-American Comics turned up at newspapers, magazines and radio stations all over the United States. The identity of Wonder Woman’s creator had been “at first kept secret,” it said, but the time had come to make a shocking announcement: “the author of ‘Wonder Woman’ is Dr. William Moulton Marston, internationally famous psychologist.” The truth about Wonder Woman had come out at last.

Or so, at least, it was made to appear. But, really, the name of Wonder Woman’s creator was the least of her secrets.

Wonder Woman is the most popular female comic-book superhero of all time. Aside from Superman and Batman, no other comic-book character has lasted as long. Generations of girls have carried their sandwiches to school in Wonder Woman lunchboxes. Like every other superhero, Wonder Woman has a secret identity. Unlike every other superhero, she also has a secret history.

In one episode, a newspaper editor named Brown, desperate to discover Wonder Woman’s past, assigns a team of reporters to chase her down; she easily escapes them. Brown, gone half mad, is committed to a hospital. Wonder Woman disguises herself as a nurse and brings him a scroll. “This parchment seems to be the history of that girl you call ‘Wonder Woman’!” she tells him. “A strange, veiled woman left it with me.” Brown leaps out of bed and races back to the city desk, where he cries out, parchment in hand, “Stop the presses! I’ve got the history of Wonder Woman!” But Wonder Woman’s secret history isn’t written on parchment. Instead, it lies buried in boxes and cabinets and drawers, in thousands of documents, housed in libraries, archives and collections spread all over the United States, including the private papers of creator Marston—papers that, before I saw them, had never before been seen by anyone outside of Marston’s family.

The veil that has shrouded Wonder Woman’s past for seven decades hides beneath it a crucial story about comic books and superheroes and censorship and feminism. As Marston once put it, “Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who, I believe, should rule the world.”

Comic books were more or less invented in 1933 by Maxwell Charles Gaines, a former elementary school principal who went on to found All-American Comics. Superman first bounded over tall buildings in 1938. Batman began lurking in the shadows in 1939. Kids read them by the piles. But at a time when war was ravaging Europe, comic books celebrated violence, even sexual violence. In 1940, the Chicago Daily News called comics a “national disgrace.” “Ten million copies of these sex-horror serials are sold every month,” wrote the newspaper’s literary editor, calling for parents and teachers to ban the comics, “unless we want a coming generation even more ferocious than the present one.”

To defend himself against critics, Gaines, in 1940, hired Marston as a consultant. “‘Doc’ Marston has long been an advocate of the right type of comic magazines,” he explained. Marston held three degrees from Harvard, including a PhD in psychology. He led what he called “an experimental life.” He’d been a lawyer, a scientist and a professor. He is generally credited with inventing the lie detector test: He was obsessed with uncovering other people’s secrets. He’d been a consulting psychologist for Universal Pictures. He’d written screenplays, a novel and dozens of magazine articles. Gaines had read about Marston in an article in Family Circle magazine. In the summer of 1940, Olive Richard, a staff writer for the magazine, visited Marston at his house in Rye, New York, to ask him for his expert opinion about comics.

“Some of them are full of torture, kidnapping, sadism, and other cruel business,” she said.

“Unfortunately, that is true,” Marston admitted, but “when a lovely heroine is bound to the stake, comics followers are sure that the rescue will arrive in the nick of time. The reader’s wish is to save the girl, not to see her suffer.”

Marston was a man of a thousand lives and a thousand lies. “Olive Richard” was the pen name of Olive Byrne, and she hadn’t gone to visit Marston—she lived with him. She was also the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most important feminists of the 20th century. In 1916, Sanger and her sister, Ethel Byrne, Olive Byrne’s mother, had opened the first birth-control clinic in the United States. They were both arrested for the illegal distribution of contraception. In jail in 1917, Ethel Byrne went on a hunger strike and nearly died.

Olive Byrne met Marston in 1925, when she was a senior at Tufts; he was her psychology professor. Marston was already married, to a lawyer named Elizabeth Holloway. When Marston and Byrne fell in love, he gave Holloway a choice: either Byrne could live with them, or he would leave her. Byrne moved in. Between 1928 and 1933, each woman bore two children; they lived together as a family. Holloway went to work; Byrne stayed home and raised the children. They told census-takers and anyone else who asked that Byrne was Marston’s widowed sister-in-law. “Tolerant people are the happiest,” Marston wrote in a magazine essay in 1939, so “why not get rid of costly prejudices that hold you back?” He listed the “Six Most Common Types of Prejudice.” Eliminating prejudice number six—“Prejudice against unconventional people and non-conformists”—meant the most to him. Byrne’s sons didn’t find out that Marston was their father until 1963—when Holloway finally admitted it—and only after she extracted a promise that no one would raise the subject ever again.

Gaines didn’t know any of this when he met Marston in 1940 or else he would never have hired him: He was looking to avoid controversy, not to court it. Marston and Wonder Woman were pivotal to the creation of what became DC Comics. (DC was short for Detective Comics, the comic book in which Batman debuted.) In 1940, Gaines decided to counter his critics by forming an editorial advisory board and appointing Marston to serve on it, and DC decided to stamp comic books in which Superman and Batman appeared with a logo, an assurance of quality, reading, “A DC Publication.” And, since “the comics’ worst offense was their blood-curdling masculinity,” Marston said, the best way to fend off critics would be to create a female superhero.

“Well, Doc,” Gaines said, “I picked Superman after every syndicate in America turned it down. I’ll take a chance on your Wonder Woman! But you’ll have to write the strip yourself.”

In February 1941, Marston submitted a draft of his first script, explaining the “under-meaning” of Wonder Woman’s Amazonian origins in ancient Greece, where men had kept women in chains, until they broke free and escaped. “The NEW WOMEN thus freed and strengthened by supporting themselves (on Paradise Island) developed enormous physical and mental power.” His comic, he said, was meant to chronicle “a great movement now under way—the growth in the power of women.”

Wonder Woman made her debut in All-Star Comics at the end of 1941 and on the cover of a new comic book, Sensation Comics, at the beginning of 1942, drawn by an artist named Harry G. Peter. She wore a golden tiara, a red bustier, blue underpants and knee-high, red leather boots. She was a little slinky; she was very kinky. She’d left Paradise to fight fascism with feminism, in “America, the last citadel of democracy, and of equal rights for women!”

It seemed to Gaines like so much good, clean, superpatriotic fun. But in March 1942, the National Organization for Decent Literature put Sensation Comics on its blacklist of “Publications Disapproved for Youth” for one reason: “Wonder Woman is not sufficiently dressed.”

Gaines decided he needed another expert. He turned to Lauretta Bender, an associate professor of psychiatry at New York University’s medical school and a senior psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital, where she was director of the children’s ward, an expert on aggression. She’d long been interested in comics but her interest had grown in 1940, after her husband, Paul Schilder, was killed by a car while walking home from visiting Bender and their 8-day-old daughter in the hospital. Bender, left with three children under the age of 3, soon became painfully interested in studying how children cope with trauma. In 1940, she conducted a study with Reginald Lourie, a medical resident under her supervision, investigating the effect of comics on four children brought to Bellevue Hospital for behavioral problems. Tessie, 12, had witnessed her father, a convicted murderer, kill himself. She insisted on calling herself Shiera, after a comic-book girl who is always rescued at the last minute by the Flash. Kenneth, 11, had been raped. He was frantic unless medicated or “wearing a Superman cape.” He felt safe in it—he could fly away if he wanted to—and “he felt that the cape protected him from an assault.” Bender and Lourie concluded the comic books were “the folklore of this age,” and worked, culturally, the same way fables and fairy tales did.

That hardly ended the controversy. In February 1943, Josette Frank, an expert on children’s literature, a leader of the Child Study Association and a member of Gaines’ advisory board, sent Gaines a letter, telling him that while she’d never been a fan of Wonder Woman, she felt she now had to speak out about its “sadistic bits showing women chained, tortured, etc.” She had a point. In episode after episode, Wonder Woman is chained, bound, gagged, lassoed, tied, fettered and manacled. “Great girdle of Aphrodite!” she cries at one point. “Am I tired of being tied up!”

The story behind the writing and editing of Wonder Woman can be pieced together from Bender’s papers, at Brooklyn College; Frank’s papers, at the University of Minnesota; and Marston’s editorial correspondence, along with a set of original scripts, housed at the Dibner Library at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. In his original scripts, Marston described scenes of bondage in careful, intimate detail with utmost precision. For a story about Mars, the God of War, Marston gave Peter elaborate instructions for the panel in which Wonder Woman is taken prisoner:

“Closeup, full length figure of WW. Do some careful chaining here—Mars’s men are experts! Put a metal collar on WW with a chain running off from the panel, as though she were chained in the line of prisoners. Have her hands clasped together at her breast with double bands on her wrists, her Amazon bracelets and another set. Between these runs a short chain, about the length of a handcuff chain—this is what compels her to clasp her hands together. Then put another, heavier, larger chain between her wrist bands which hangs in a long loop to just above her knees. At her ankles show a pair of arms and hands, coming from out of the panel, clasping about her ankles. This whole panel will lose its point and spoil the story unless these chains are drawn exactly as described here.”

Later in the story, Wonder Woman is locked in a cell. Straining to overhear a conversation in the next room, through the amplification of “bone conduction,” she takes her chain in her teeth: “Closeup of WW’s head shoulders. She holds her neck chain between her teeth. The chain runs taut between her teeth and the wall, where it is locked to a steel ring bolt.”

Gaines forwarded Frank’s letter of complaint to Marston. Marston shrugged it off. But then Dorothy Roubicek, who helped edit Wonder Woman—the first woman editor at DC Comics—objected to Wonder Woman’s torture, too.

“Of course I wouldn’t expect Miss Roubicek to understand all this,” Marston wrote Gaines. “After all I have devoted my entire life to working out psychological principles. Miss R. has been in comics only 6 months or so, hasn’t she? And never in psychology.” But “the secret of woman’s allure,” he told Gaines, is that “women enjoy submission—being bound.”

Marston wrote Gaines right back.

“I have the good Sergeant’s letter in which he expresses his enthusiasm over chains for women—so what?” As a practicing clinical psychologist, he said, he was unimpressed. “Some day I’ll make you a list of all the items about women that different people have been known to get passionate over—women’s hair, boots, belts, silk worn by women, gloves, stockings, garters, panties, bare backs,” he promised. “You can’t have a real woman character in any form of fiction without touching off a great many readers’ erotic fancies. Which is swell, I say.”

Marston was sure he knew what line not to cross. Harmless erotic fantasies are terrific, he said. “It’s the lousy ones you have to look out for—the harmful, destructive, morbid erotic fixations—real sadism, killing, blood-letting, torturing where the pleasure is in the victim’s actual pain, etc. Those are 100 per cent bad and I won’t have any part of them.” He added, in closing, “Please thank Miss Roubicek for the list of menaces.”

In 1944, Gaines and Marston signed an agreement for Wonder Woman to become a newspaper strip, syndicated by King Features. Busy with the newspaper strip, Marston hired an 18-year-old student, Joye Hummel, to help him write comic-book scripts. Joye Hummel, now Joye Kelly, turned 90 this April; in June, she donated her collection of never-before-seen scripts and comic books to the Smithsonian Libraries. Hiring her helped with Marston’s editorial problem, too. Her stories were more innocent than his. She’d type them and bring them to Sheldon Mayer, Marston’s editor at DC, she told me, and “He always OK’d mine faster because I didn’t make mine as sexy.” To celebrate syndication, Gaines had his artists draw a panel in which Superman and Batman, rising out of the front page of a daily newspaper, call out to Wonder Woman, who’s leaping onto the page, “Welcome, Wonder Woman!”

Gaines had another kind of welcome to make, too. He asked Lauretta Bender to take Frank’s place on the editorial advisory board.

In an ad King Features ran to persuade newspapers to purchase the strip, pointing out that Wonder Woman already had “ten million loyal fans,” her name is written in rope.

Hidden behind this controversy is one reason for all those chains and ropes, which has to do with the history of the fight for women’s rights. Because Marston kept his true relationship with Olive Byrne a secret, he kept his family’s ties to Margaret Sanger a secret, too. Marston, Byrne and Holloway, and even Harry G. Peter, the artist who drew Wonder Woman, had all been powerfully influenced by the suffrage, feminism and birth control movements. And each of those movements had used chains as a centerpiece of its iconography.

In 1911, when Marston was a freshman at Harvard, the British suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst, who’d chained herself to the gates outside 10 Downing Street, came to speak on campus. When Sanger faced charges of obscenity for explaining birth control in a magazine she founded called the Woman Rebel, a petition sent to President Woodrow Wilson on her behalf read, “While men stand proudly and face the sun, boasting that they have quenched the wickedness of slavery, what chains of slavery are, have been or ever could be so intimate a horror as the shackles on every limb—on every thought—on the very soul of an unwilling pregnant woman?” American suffragists threatened to chain themselves to the gates outside the White House. In 1916, in Chicago, women representing the states where women had still not gained the right to vote marched in chains.

In the 1910s, Peter was a staff artist at the magazine Judge, where he contributed to its suffrage page called “The Modern Woman,” which ran from 1912 to 1917. More regularly, the art on that page was drawn by another staff artist, a woman named Lou Rogers. Rogers’ suffrage and feminist cartoons very often featured an allegorical woman chained or roped, breaking her bonds. Sanger hired Rogers as art director for the Birth Control Review, a magazine she started in 1917. In 1920, in a book called Woman and the New Race, Sanger argued that woman “had chained herself to her place in society and the family through the maternal functions of her nature, and only chains thus strong could have bound her to her lot as a brood animal.” In 1923, an illustration commissioned by Rogers for the cover of Birth Control Review pictured a weakened and desperate woman, fallen to her knees and chained at the ankle to a ball that reads, “UNWANTED BABIES.” A chained woman inspired the title of Sanger’s 1928 book, Motherhood in Bondage, a compilation of some of the thousands of letters she had received from women begging her for information about birth control; she described the letters as “the confessions of enslaved mothers.”
When Marston created Wonder Woman, in 1941, he drew on Sanger’s legacy and inspiration. But he was also determined to keep the influence of Sanger on Wonder Woman a secret.

He took that secret to his grave when he died in 1947. Most superheroes didn’t survive peacetime and those that did were changed forever in 1954, when a psychiatrist named Fredric Wertham published a book called Seduction of the Innocent and testified before a Senate subcommittee investigating the comics. Wertham believed that comics were corrupting American kids, and turning them into juvenile delinquents. He especially disliked Wonder Woman. Bender had written that Wonder Woman comics display “a strikingly advanced concept of femininity and masculinity” and that “women in these stories are placed on an equal footing with men and indulge in the same type of activities.” Wertham found the feminism in Wonder Woman repulsive.

“As to the ‘advanced femininity,’ what are the activities in comic books which women ‘indulge in on an equal footing with men’? They do not work. They are not homemakers. They do not bring up a family. Mother-love is entirely absent. Even when Wonder Woman adopts a girl there are Lesbian overtones,” he said. At the Senate hearings, Bender testified, too. If anything in American popular culture was bad for girls, she said, it wasn’t Wonder Woman; it was Walt Disney. “The mothers are always killed or sent to the insane asylums in Walt Disney movies,” she said. This argument fell on deaf ears.

Wertham’s papers, housed at the Library of Congress, were only opened to researchers in 2010. They suggest that Wertham’s antipathy toward Bender had less to do with the content of the comics than with professional rivalry. (Paul Schilder, Bender’s late husband, had been Wertham’s boss for many years.) Wertham’s papers contain a scrap on which he compiled a list he titled “Paid Experts of the Comic Book Industry Posing as Independent Scholars.” First on the list as the comic book industry’s number one lackey was Bender, about whom Wertham wrote: “Boasted privately of bringing up her 3 children on money from crime comic books.”

In the wake of the 1954 hearings, DC Comics removed Bender from its editorial advisory board, and the Comics Magazine Association of America adopted a new code. Under its terms, comic books could contain nothing cruel: “All scenes of horror, excessive bloodshed, gory or gruesome crimes, depravity, lust, sadism, masochism shall not be permitted.” There could be nothing kinky: “Illicit sex relations are neither to be hinted at nor portrayed. Violent love scenes as well as sexual abnormalities are unacceptable.” And there could be nothing unconventional: “The treatment of love-romance stories shall emphasize the value of the home and the sanctity of marriage.”

“Anniversary, which we forgot entirely,” Olive Byrne wrote in her secret diary in 1936. (The diary remains in family hands.) During the years when she lived with Marston and Holloway, she wore, instead of a wedding ring, a pair of bracelets. Wonder Woman wears those same cuffs. Byrne died in 1990, at the age of 86. She and Holloway had been living together in an apartment in Tampa. While Byrne was in the hospital, dying, Holloway fell and broke her hip; she was admitted to the same hospital. They were in separate rooms. They’d lived together for 64 years. When Holloway, in her hospital bed, was told that Byrne had died, she sang a poem by Tennyson: “Sunset and the evening star, / And one clear call for me! / And may there be no moaning of the bar, / When I put out to sea.” No newspaper ran an obituary.

Elizabeth Holloway Marston died in 1993. An obituary ran in the New York Times. It was headed, “Elizabeth H. Marston, Inspiration for Wonder Woman, 100.” This was, at best, a half-truth.

So, seriously educated and influential people involved, the writer credited with being pivotal in the invention of the lie detector and if you’ve seen the first two seasons of the most famous serialized tv adaptation with Lynda Carter (from Phoenix [winged fireball], Arizona) – it’s almost all war propaganda. Like with almost all Mother Goddess story based media I’ve seen there is an expectation there, a right to have ownership of the Divine Mother/Daughter/Dark Mother, to have her seeming consent and validation whilst treating her/them like crap yet still want her/them to rescue, forgive, even love unconditionally and let them continue as if nothing happened/changed. In Wonder Woman – Diana is a founding member of the Justice League, she stands up for the Allies and is the connection between the human world and Paradise. If you’ve known masons, you might have noted the obsession with doors; opening doors for people and generally being chivalrous and courteous is part of my nature but in one particularly masonic town Mum and I have noticed people rushing to go through doors/fences etc at the same time as us e.g. if they’re in front they will slowly go to the door, look back at us continually and if we stop they stop, if they make it first they wait until we get there for us to open the ‘portal’/’link’, if we overtake them they’ll speed up to catch up and even push themselves through with us. Or a shop/place of business can be empty and then suddenly people will hurry to go through at the same time. Symbolism and the appearance of ‘permission’ and ‘partnership’ is very important to these people. We don’t open doors for anybody anymore but it’s hard to go through by ourselves, ironically the front door to our residence there became very hard to open/close after we moved in, the opposite to another place we lived where the front door was fine when we went to see the place before moving in (being renovated) but when we moved in it had become too easy to open/close (being an expensive security door the people weren’t willing to change it [again] after we noted it) but we didn’t live alone there so access may have been made easier for those who wanted to be in the same place.

It’s silly and might as well be superstition, wishes of the desperate, but that’s ritual for you and we’ve come across numerous rites of passage. These are people who want to be seen talking to us, seen/living nearby, or when part of our conversation is repeated by people standing 20ft further down the road when we walk past them, shops that are empty that fill up when we go in them and I’ve had shop owners say to me “you’re my lucky charm”, “you bring in business”, people who walk past seemingly just to cough or laugh right at us. Then there’s the cars; there’s been times when I was walking in car parks or as proper on the side of country roads and suddenly turned around to almost have a car bump into me and then decide to use the rest of the road, once a driver laughed, another time a van almost drove into Mum’s arm, other people follow you in their cars like one occasion where a woman stopped her car to ask us what we were doing (we’d stopped to take a break, and when she stopped another car coming from the opposite direction stopped to watch) then invited us to have tea at her place, described where it was (same place we were staying), winked and drove there. We didn’t go, the next time she was with her partner and children and they stopped us on that same road to ask what we were doing and what religion we were (we’re not religious) and this time asked if we wanted a lift. We declined, they still wanted to know if believed in any god, I was declining and politely trying to stop the conversation but Mum said the Goddess Kali and then they got really questioning, wouldn’t leave us alone, stopped traffic three times to crawl along at our pace, stopped and parked twice further down the road to stop us and ask about Kali and why we wouldn’t tell them anything about her, why were were being so ‘nasty’ to them, how there is only Christianity and their God yet they were ones wanting to follow us not the other way round – we’d said to look online and leave us alone because they were harassing us down the 1.5 mile road. Then there’s the vehicles that don’t go anywhere, they drive past on the road, turn around and come back and as they pass stare at us; at another place there was one van that always came and went when we did, it didn’t matter what time of the day/night, one time we came back really late 4am-ish and it still hurtled past. Another place we went camping, no space for vehicles where we camped but as soon as we left the next morning and got to the road all the drivers parked there started up and left too. Thankfully the idiots dressed in Black (yes it sounds ridiculous, and it is) aren’t as obvious anymore, one occasion two particular dummies actually zigged zagged after us in a field – when we went one direction they did, changed direction so did they, stopped to look at the ducks, they did too, started to go, so did they – and then I looked to the road on the side and lo and behold there’s another guy, this one with sunglasses on a cloudy day, keeping pace with us on the other side of the bushes and looked away as soon as I saw him. Another time we were returning to a place after visiting the beach and on the way back a MiB (ack that is such an embarrassing term) was staring at us from an alley whilst on his phone and as we passed we heard him say “they’re on their way back”, that was after another one of them was sitting behind Mum on the beach throwing pebbles next to her.

Obviously the world of professional sports entertainment and in particular wrestling is full of ‘characters’; a soap opera with stuntpersonship but also a heck of a lot of rivalry and feuds, the backstage comes into the ‘squared circle/ring’ at times. It sometimes seems like the gods, monsters, demons, demi-gods, spirits etc live on in comic books and manga related media but the heroes and villains are the stars, superstars, faces, and heels in wrestling too – especially since it’s so pantomime. Elaborate characters, costume, names/moves, themes – all very gladiatorial amphitheater entertainment as if Romans were still around. I used to watch a lot of it myself when I was much younger. In regards to the logo it symbolically implies they have the blessing of the goddess, no they didn’t and they don’t, and I’m glad the World Wildlife Fund took exception to them as well (for sharing the same acronym and breaking a trade agreement) forcing the World Wrestling Federation to change their name in 2001. Nature beats wannabes any day 😛 (Though I’m not keen on some of the key people behind the now called World Wide Fund for Nature, same goes for any company/corporation/financial institution/major charity, when I say ‘Nature’ I mean actual Nature, not the orchestrators.) The WWE, ECW and TNA even used an Indian man who calls himself ‘The Great Khali’ (initially along with his ‘manager’ and partner ‘Tiger Raj Singh’). You’re dreaming, posers.

Just as names are important for people, names and logos are important for companies, especially big companies from Starbucks using the Abraxas two ‘legged’ serpent god icon as is but to a modern person it looks like a mermaid but it goes with their name – star worshipers wanting your resources – to Apple (knowledge) and Windows (portals) and both those logos are split into colours/levels.

Original Cindy and Original Sin

Last week we/the public were inundated with the tail end of the latest episode in the Will & Kate ‘lapping it up, loving our status otherwise we’d be Z-list celebs’ show regarding their Tour of India and then flooded with the results of the buildup for the highest profile birthday on the planet, well one of her birthdays, the mater herself. Then we heard about the deaths of dark mother figure ‘ninth wonder of the world’ Chyna and ganymede Prince (the daughter in modern son form). All the world’s a stage.

I wrote a farewell post for Chyna and since we’ve learned that her death is considered an ‘accidental overdose’ – at least they didn’t say suicide which would have been beyond insulting; that woman knew how to be fit and healthy, an icon of what you can achieve with consistent physical effort, paying close attention to her diet and health, preparing her healthy food business and planning to spend time with her family that she was looking forward to and for some time she hasn’t been afraid to show the world her non-star self. She wasn’t suicidal, although I get the impression she may have known something was ending.

In that post I mentioned the [awesome] tv series Dark Angel (2000-2002) and two of the main characters. There were many great characters in that show, some very likable like Max, of course 😛 . Today I thought I’d write a bit about her best friend, Original Cindy. Some of the fist things that come to the modern mind could be Sindy, Barbie, dollies, toys but there’s more to it than that. What we’re talking about here is the Original, Cindy. The original Mother figure always has herself in parts for assistance, close companions, bodyguards etc – something that goes beyond a sidekick, it’s not necessarily an affectionate bond, it’s more solid than that, rock solid, true devotion to another being that is beyond whatever happens between them because ultimately they are/are like one person. A kind of bond that surpasses time and space.

Original Cindy Dark Angel

Original Cindy is Black and a lesbian, she represents the Dark Mother (showing the original feminine here). Max is Brown, hetero but cautious and can’t touch her beau – she is the Daughter; the Dark Mother and Daughter aren’t known for creating, all three parts Mother/Daughter/Dark Mother are warriors so there is crossover but generally the Daughter is the mediator/the link between the Mother and creation and the Dark Mother is the destroyer. In Dark Angel we see Original Cindy’s partner Diamond who poignantly had broken out of prison and unknowingly had been infected with a fatal disease as part of an experiment on prisoners. ‘Daimon’ (looks like Damian or daemon doesn’t it) refers to the spirit in later culture referred to as the holy ghost. Remember that the modern names for the ‘devil’ (that word in itself being a demonization of the Devi i.e. Mother Goddess) include Lucifer and Satan; both of which again don’t really refer to what we consider nowadays. Lucifer for example being the holy light, even the morning/evening star Venus (or lighter matches if you remember the 1830’s). Satan can be seen in differently too – type of djinn, plural not individual but remember that the d/jinn consider themselves smokeless fire, pure, and are an elder race. No wonder really why the the giant diamond in space was called Lucy [in the sky with diamonds] in 2004 after the Beatles [scarab = gem/ornament cut in the form of a beetle] song.

Then there’s original sin. Original sin in the latest installment of the official story is Eve, billed as the original woman but there was a Mother figure before her, billed as Adam’s first wife Lilith. Eve was given awareness, was awoken from a semi-consciousness by eating an apple from a sacred tree (we often see it as red for its own reasons, maybe I’ll fit that in somewhere later). The tree and and the snake are sometimes seen as one, sometimes as two i.e. a snake who just happens to be in a tree but it’s not clear whether the tree (and trees were sacred to root peoples who knew their importance for them, other animals and land/environment) is separate from the snake since the snake also symbolizes renewal/the cycle of life and later the two symbols became the winged staff used in medicine. Either way the snake is similar to the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland (and like many authors Lewis Carroll put his beliefs into his writing), helped Eve and Eve in turn gifted knowledge to humanity. How shameful. Before that they were living in a garden/micro-environment/lab experiment presided over by ‘God’ and his helper/worker/descendant races, nowadays we only think of them as ‘angels’. Due to her crime Eve and all her daughters/women were forever punished with pregnancy/childbirth/afterbirth (if they survived and lived long enough after year upon year of it from childhood themselves). Also of course the sin of being born of a woman which has to be cleansed via a water ritual as if babies don’t come out of a fluid sac. I’m surprised no one’s thought of using soap in the ceremony. Interestingly it highlights that apparently humans weren’t created/born in the way we think if this is punishment. I would have preferred to come out of a plant or down on a moonbeam personally *ahem*.

Alright let’s take it back further, whilst Adam is the original man of the combination of the elements Eve is the eve – the cusp – as aforementioned Lilith came beforehand and later became known as the mother of monsters due to genetically modified/mixed species children she apparently had, though ‘God’ had the same. What got Lilith demonized and replaced? Wanting equal rights. Predating the Hebrew we associate Lilith with the serpent and the tree which may be why in some artworks the snake is depicted as part woman, the goddess with the intel who wanted to tell Eve the truth.

What is sin? Sin is an old word for the moon; many gods and goddesses have been associated with the moon (same goes for the sun) and we often see crescent moons on goddesses (and the crescent has its own connotations); in terms of the Mesopotamian pantheon the moon deity was male. The moon has become associated with wisdom.

What is Original Cindy? ‘Normal’ (the name of the guy most of the main characters work for as bike messengers/couriers) insults her (he insults everybody, and they’re not exactly the most reliable staff either) when she returns from trying another job maybe she isn’t the ultimate/almighty ‘goddess of the universe’ she thinks she is, but ironically that is part of what she represents, is covering for and helping to help everybody in general. It’s similar to how Max always gets blamed for escaping from Manticore and apparently deserting everybody there making things worse for them plus called a loner who looks out for herself (whilst she looks after everybody around her, helps both when asked and not asked) yet if she hadn’t escaped with her unit, they wouldn’t have been able to return to destroy the place and free the inmates. Max also refers to her cat heritage early on “because it’s the Egyptian goddess Bast, the goddess who comprehends all goddesses, eye of Ra, protector, avenger, destroyer, giver of life who lives forever” when Logan Cale meets her (Cale being 1 part of the triple goddess – the triplicate – the power of 3 – the highest divided form of the Mother – Mother/Daughter/Dark Mother which later became know as Faith, Hope and Charity; things that Logan is trying to accomplish with Eyes Only – Max has special eyes that are unique out of her unit and ‘donated’ from an earlier dead woman).

Original Cindy talks in third person and often in verse, characteristic of the ancient epics. Something she seems to have learned from Diamond, but claims not to. She’s also a fan of Xena: Warrior Princess 😛 another dark mother figure and paired with another daughter figure. The original Mother in Dark Angel was a native girl who was captured and raped by three invader males who bred her until they had a child they were satisfied with, they buried her and the dead babies. Their remains were found by Sandeman and he started his genetics experiments, later taken over by the government and he disappeared (remember the old stories of the sandman talk of a creature that forced children to sleep, beat them and sometimes fed them to his own children). The rape of the indigenous girls and women is commonplace in invasions to ensure the conquerors have a ‘valid’ claim on the place via genes. The use of the native girl is similar to the back story of the ‘First’ in slayer lineage Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The First was a local girl three men did ‘black magic’ on possessing her with a shadow demon to make her strong enough to fight demons, to slay them; like the ‘polluted’ Eve in the Gnostic Sophianic story, and as Buffy says “I didn’t come here to get knocked up… You violated her”, Buffy herself being a daughter figure, her mother Joy/ce dies and her sister Dawn is pure energy and not a normal birth.

The First Slayer

Ironically the Breeding Cult in Dark Angel are trying to achieve the same thing as Manticore just via selective and what they consider normal sex, they too discard the ‘breeding partner’/victim after they have a child they’re satisfied with. They’re obsessed with purebreds, how many were inbred? We assume that they didn’t include other animals in their practices though they do use snakes in their initiation rituals and have amazing strength and pain tolerance. They hate the ultimate pure bred produced by Manticore, Max (triple mother, matrix), and try to make her into a villain for the public so that they hate her and don’t realize she could offer hope/knowledge/help.

Max is the daughter figure because it is through the Daughter that creation learns about the Mother, particularly necessary after having been under the spell/dream of the usurper workers who made themselves into God/s and lorded it over creation. Even in the Devi Gita – which is still a patriarchal cradles of civilization version of older narrative – but due to its antiquity is still revealing admits that the ultimate gods/the ruling pantheon/the strongest of the strongest/the firsts etc etc etc were not the creators, they themselves and they cosmos they knew were created by the Mother Goddess/Devi/Vidya/Hrim – the name is not mentioned but ‘Lalita Tripurasundari’ is the ultimate/complete Shakti, the Matrika whose sri yantra contains the other goddesses. Where they put their stamp in was at the introduction of the caste/class system and when there’s been a cataclysm or perhaps ‘demon they couldn’t definitely beat’ they call for Mother, like praying on their deathbed after a lifetime of doing sh*t to everybody, warring with each other and feeling punished by natural disasters.

What you thought there were only the Bhagavad-gita, Mahabharata and Ramayana? Well I can see why – the Devi Gita is rarely talked about and harder to find, even the copiously educated, beautifully intellectual and genteel ladies of mother-god.com hadn’t included it in their articles until Mum told them about it. So here’s a version of it for reference:

The problem is that despite the magnificent descriptions we know that patriarchy and the male triad plus Indra took over so unlike the gods/God of later religions the Mother isn’t omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent plus she’s generous and loving to a fault so she’s subject to being tricked, trapped, hurt similar to the rest of us. In that sense we can identify with her much more and probably part of why she was/is so precious to indigenous peoples and even modern people who feel the need for something better than pack mentality to believe in. Something beloved. She’s almost like a bigger version of the Earth Mother, something Earth and Earth’s children can look to. It left a scar on people and their culture when she disappeared/was conquered, I can see why her image has endured in our beliefs even though twisted. We lost more than we bargained for in her demise.

Like James Cameron puts in Avatar where he mixed/twisted narratives but at least we knew the bad side was the bad side i.e. when people desire something that belongs to someone else we make excuses and add to incidents to go to war and justify resource grabbing/genocide. “We killed our Mother” [and look at the state of us]. Signourney the Weaver (Fate/Spinner/Time) has portrayed the Mother/Dark Mother role well both in Avatar (and very interestingly via cloning and dream out of body experience/travel technology in that film – and again there’s an episode in the series Charmed that has the dream technology theme with dark mother figure Prudence playing lead – Shannen Doherty, Shannen representative of goddess Sionen, the flowing water and wisdom – the cosmos is the sea/ocean) and as Elle-n Ripley in the Alien series, the second film ‘this time it’s war’ also written/directed by James Cameron, a series in which the ancient narrative is aptly put.

In Avatar we also see the sacred trees and people with snake like hair which gives them knowledge through telepathy and they live on Pandora (an earlier parallel of Eve). Pandora was the first and complete woman, a great work that then became associated with sin, i.e. knowledge and hope. I’ve never liked hope personally, I’m a cynic and find it extends pain, the same with knowledge so much of it takes a lot of searching for ‘truth’ but then in the long run with enough effort sometimes, just sometimes… :-).

Memories of Goddess – Degraded, Desecrated, Debased, Disregarded, Dismissed, Almost Disremembered.

I’ve been reminded by Mum as usual (though indirectly this time) about a site that I think should be remembered. I previously looked at some of the research of Max Dashú for African indigenous learnings. Max is a woman whose determined interest in women and the role of the female in history prior to subjects like women’s history and ethnic studies led her on a massive journey of discovery of worldwide events, beliefs and practices and as with many, she noticed there was a lot of similarity. The article below focuses on later cultures/religion that are still current and widespread, and their less commonly known African and Western Asian roots.

Wisdom goddesses are a primary survival of Goddess consciousness within patriarchal systems. In an intact Goddess cosmology, Wisdom is not sharply differentiated from other divine qualities. In that sense the separation is artificial, and typical of the divisions that arise when theologians erect their esoteric hegemonies. But I’m struck by the recurrence of Wisdom deities in the “major” religions, and how archaic streams of Goddess reverence continue to flow through them under the doctrinal surfaces. For seekers groping a way back to Origins, it can be illuminating to meditate on divine Wisdom in these forms.

Khokhmah and Sophia

Thou art a Wisdom. Thou are a Knowing. Thou art Truth.
Because of Thee, there is life. Life is from Thee.
Because of Thee, there is mind.

The ancient Hebrew name for Wisdom is Khokhmah, a feminine noun. In Jewish scripture, it was Khokhmah who personified the female Divine. She is understood as an emanation of God, yet she resonates with the Hebrew Goddess who is otherwise assailed in the Bible, especially Asherah, she of the sacred Tree. Proverbs 3:18 calls up an image of Khokhmah that originates in the oldest core of Jewish culture: “She is a Tree of Life to all who lay hold of her.”

In the same book, Khokhmah sings, “The one who finds me, finds life.” Like the goddess Asherah, regarded as the partner of Yahweh by the ancient Hebrews, Khokhmah is linked to the pillar. “My throne was in the pillar of cloud,” she declares in Ben Sirach (24:4). In Proverbs 9:1 she builds a house of seven pillars.

Asphodel Long’s book A Chariot Drawn by Lions offers profound insights into the survival of the Hebrew Goddess. She points out that Wisdom is another form of the Shekhinah, the divine Presence. Both are “expressed in light and glory,” both involved in creation, enthroned in heaven, intermediaries between god and the world, ascending and descending, and winged.

The Book of Wisdom of Solomon, written by Alexandrian Jews in the Hellenistic era, renames Khokhmah as Sophia, the Greek word for Wisdom. In this text, as Long points out, Sophia “takes over the powers and function of God” and the creation story is told using the word “she.” The ancient author is careful to qualify this audacity by describing Wisdom as God’s breath and emanation, but still praises her at length in her own right as “holy” and “all-powerful”:

For in her there is a spirit that is intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle;
mobile, clear, unpolluted, distinct, invulnerable, loving the good, keen, irresistible,
Beneficent, human, steadfast, sure, free from anxiety, all-powerful,
overseeing all and penetrating through all spirits that are intelligent and pure and most subtle.
For wisdom is more mobile than any motion; because of her pureness she pervades and penetrates all things. [Long, 46-7]

Another beautiful passage likens Wisdom to “a flame of stars through the night.” [Allegro, 171] The praise-names in the Book of Wisdom of Solomon resonate deeply with those in the goddess litanies of India. The most celebrated of these is the Sri Lalitaa Sahasranama, an invocation of Goddess under a thousand names, including Intelligence, Holy, Unique, Multiformed, Subtle, Pure, Beyond All Danger, Loving the Good, Beneficence, Steady, Without Anxiety, Great Power, and All-Pervasive.

Long’s illuminating exegesis of the Alexandrian Wisdom litany brings forward the little-known fact that the Greek name monogenes (“unique, singly born”) began as a title of female divinities. It originates in a Kemetic title of Neit, Hathor and Isis: “self-born, self-produced,” and later appears in Orphic hymns to Demeter, Persephone and Athena. Christians subsequently applied it to Yeshua of Nazareth who was cast as the “only-begotten son” of god. [Long, 49]

In late antiquity other titles arose in the Judaic tradition: Shekhinah (Divine Presence) and Matronit (the Mother). Kabbalists redefined Khokhmah as a masculine power, and assigned Binah (Understanding) to the feminine sphere. Torah became to some extent a personification of Wisdom, and Jews in many countries invited Shabbat to enter their homes as the bride of god and the essence of peace and joy.

There is not room here to enter the Egyptian Stream of Wisdom, but what follows can only be understood in the light of the veneration of Auset, known in Hellenistic culture as Isis. This goddess had come to be worshipped beyond the borders of Egypt, first in west Asia and north Africa, then in Europe. Isis aretalogies (praise-songs based on the affirmation “I am”) emphasize creative Wisdom as one of her divine qualities:

I am Isis, mistress of every land
I laid down laws for humanity and ordained things that no one may change…
I divided the earth from the heavens
I made manifest the paths of the stars
I prescribed the course of the sun and moon
I found out the labors of the sea
I made justice mighty…

A syncretic ferment of Egyptian, Greek and Hebrew traditions occurred in Alexandria and the eastern Mediterranean during the Roman empire. Jewish writers appear to have initiated a Greek series of Oracula Sibillina which begin to appear around 150 BCE. Philo Judaeus of Alexandria identified Sophia as Mother of the divine Logos and as Isis, mother of Horus. But Philo followed Biblical tradition in according primacy to the father-god as creator, treating the divine mother—Sophia — as his attribute or emanation. Nevertheless, he described this god as the husband of Wisdom. [Long, 46, 162; Patai, 98]

The pagan priest Plutarch agreed that Isis was the same as Sophia, creator of all. [Allegro, 157] Pagan mystery religions equated Isis with Demeter, Kybele, Juno Caelestis, Bona Dea, Tyche and other Mediterranean goddesses, mixing their attributes and titles. Isis was sculptured wearing the mural crown of the Asian goddess Tyche and holding the cornucopia of the Italian Fortuna and Terra Mater. (These statuettes have been found in distant Kazakhstan and Pakistan.) Multitudes of molded figurines of Isis seated on the basket of the Eleusinian Mysteries were mass-produced for home altars within Egypt itself.

Most of these Hellenized terracotta statuettes shrink the horned solar crown of the ancient Kemetic goddess and flank it with ears of wheat, assimilating her to Demeter in a historical double rebound. The Knot of Isis that was for millennia tied around her belly moves up to her breast in a tied Grecian shawl. Other terracottas show Isis Baubo with skirts pulled up around her hips and legs opened wide. Still others look to the headwaters of the Nile, as the goddess Besit, linked to the BaTwa peoples, socalled “pygmies,” or perhaps to other little people (“dwarves”).

In the midst of this syncretism, many Isis terracottas retain the Egyptian convention showing her suckling her son (now represented as a sketchy afterthought). She also appears as Isis Bubastis — Ermouthis to the Greeks — with the lower part of her body in the form of a snake. This form of Isis has turned up as far east as Iraq.

Some Egyptian Jews engaged in ecstatic forms of worship. Philo wrote that the Therapeutae (“healers”) became “transported by divine enthusiasm.” They danced and sang hymns in harmonies and antiphonies, women with women and men with men. Then, says Philo, they feasted and drank wine, and at last all joined together in one assembly:

Perfectly beautiful are their motions, perfectly beautiful their discourse; grave and solemn are these carollers; and the final aim of their motions, their discourse, and their choral dances is piety. [Drinker, 159-160]

The Therapeutae were among the Jewish sects in which women “conducted the Sabbath services and provided influential commentaries on the scriptures.” [Long, 38] Philo described their practice as a form of spiritual healing, which in fact gave this community its name:

Inasmuch as they profess to the art of healing better than that current in towns, which cures only the bodies, they treat also souls oppressed by grievous and well-nigh intolerable diseases. [Contemplative Life, in Allegro, 109]

The biggest community of Therapeutae lived near the Mareotic lake in northern Egypt. Their huts had little prayer alcoves, and they gathered in a central building for communal meals. Like Philo, they seem to have syncretized Isis with Wisdom and called upon her for healing: “She was reckoned to cure the sick and to bring the dead to life, and she bore the title ‘Mother of God.’“ This was an ancient name of Neit, Isis, and other Kemetic goddesses.

The Gnostic Goddess

The syncretism of Judaic, Egyptian, Hellenistic and Persian traditions gave rise to Gnosticism, a name which arose directly from an emphasis on inner knowing. Until the discovery of the Nag Hammadi scrolls, what was known of the Gnostics came mostly from their sworn enemies, the institutional clergy. When church patriarchs selected the books that became the canonical christian bible, they rejected some of the earliest texts, Gnostic scriptures. Among these excluded scriptures were writings that pictured Wisdom as a divine, creative female presence.

The Goddess was still well-loved in Egypt, whose ancient religion exerted a tremendous influence on early Gnostic philosophy. The Gospel of Thomas retains an invocation from ancient litanies of Auset: “Come, lady revealing hidden secrets…” Aretalogies of Isis made their way into several Gnostic scriptures, as Great Isis continued to be syncretized with Judaic wisdom traditions of Khokhmah under Hellenistic names.

The Gnostic scripture Eugnostos the Blessed hails “the all-wise Sophia, Genetrix.” It was she, says the Origin of the World, who “created great luminaries and all of the stars and placed them in the heaven so that they should shine upon the earth.” This Gnostic passage echoes the Isis Aretalogy of Cyme: “I divided earth from heaven, I created the ways of the stars…”

Other Egyptian Gnostic texts name the Divine Female as Ennoia (Thought), Pronoia (Forethought) or Protennoia (Primal Thought), Pistis (Faith), Sige (Silence), Eidea (Image, Idea), or Charis (Grace). These titles are often used interchangeably with Sophia. Several texts address the goddess as Arche (“beginning”), following the Hebraic representation of Wisdom as Reshiit in the Palestinian Targum and the Samaritan Liturgy. [Arthur, 65, 55, 61; Long, 87ff]

The early Egyptian Gnostics embraced the Wisdom goddess as a power higher than the god who created the world. A Greek-Coptic text named Origin of the World reworks Genesis to show the Goddess taking part in creation, and restores Eve to her primordial sacred status as the Mother of All Living. In a section known as the “Eve intrusion,” Sophia creates “the Living-Eva, that is, the Instructress of Life.” This androgynous being takes form according to the image of the Mother, and proclaims her identity with her. She assumes titles of Isis, such as “consoler of the labor pains.” [Arthur, 99, 117, 131]

This book calls Eve “the mother of the living,” a title that goes back to the earliest Hebrew roots, and even further, to the Sumerian goddess Ninti. In this telling, it is Eve who gives life to Adam. The archons beheld Eve and compared her to Sophia, “the likeness which appeared to us in the light.” They plotted to rape and “pollute” Eve, and to cast Adam into a sleep, teaching him that she came into being from his rib “so that the woman will serve and he will rule over her.” But Life/Eve laughed at their scheming, darkened their eyes and left her likeness beside Adam. “She entered the tree of knowledge, and remained there. She revealed to them that she had entered the tree and become tree.” The archons ran away in fear, but later came back and defiled Eve’s likeness. “And they were deceived, not knowing that they had defiled their own bodies.” [Young, 54; Arthur, 207]

A Nag Hammadi scroll called the Testimony of Truth deifies the wise Serpent who counsels Eve to eat the fruit of knowledge: “On the day when you eat from the tree which is in the midst of Paradise, the eyes of your mind will be opened.” The scroll’s author points out that god’s threat of immediate death didn’t come true, but the Serpent’s promise of knowledge did. He calls the god of Genesis “a malicious envier” who begrudged humans the power of knowing. This theme of an imperfect creator god recurs in other Gnostic texts. Sophia rebukes this god as a liar and fool when he, unaware of her role in creation, claims sole divinity.

Another form of the syncretic Egyptian Gnostic goddess is the mysterious Barbelo. Presented as an emanation of god, she resembles Khokhmah. But christian Egyptian texts refer to Mother Barbelo as part of a trinity, along with the Father and Son. The Barbelo literature’s attempts to reconcile conflicting traditions result in contradictions. The Gospel of the Egyptians says that Barbelo originated from herself, as the ancients had said of Neit, Mother of the Gods. But the Three Stelas of Seth present her as “the first shadow of the holy Father,” who had existed before her. It addresses her with feminine pronouns, but paradoxically praises her as “the male virginal Barbelo.”[Arthur, 165-6] A later passage reverts to goddess imagery:

Thou art a Sophia. Thou art a Gnosis. Thou art truth. Because of thee, there is life. Life is from thee. Because of thee, there is mind… Thou art a cosmos of truth. Thou art a triple power… [Arthur, 166]

The Sethian Gnostics said that this trinity was made up of Light, Breath, and Darkness. The Peratae had it as Father, Son and Matter, with the Son mediating between the exalted Father and a passive female principle. [Philosophumena, in Doresse, 52, 50]
However, the Trimorphic Protennoia exalts “Barbelo, the perfect glory,” from whose thought originated the trinity of Father, Mother, Son. This scroll contains an aretalogy that unambiguously praises the goddess Protennoia as the origin: “I am Primal Thought that dwells in the Light… she who exists before the All… I move in every creature… I am the Invisible One within the All.”[Pagels, 55; Long, 92-3] Her divinity is immeasurable, ineffable and radiant. [Arthur, 168]

The Apochryphon of John contains another aretalogy of “the perfect Pronoia (forethought) of the universe,” who was “the first.” She wandered in the great darkness, “into the midst of the prison,” even into the depths of the underworld. She represents “the light which exists in light.” But this christian text compared “sister Sophia” unfavorably to Barbelo. A splintering of Gnostic goddess images was underway. They were being subordinated to “the Father,” and those not firmly partnered to a male god disparaged. The derivative Gnostic aretalogies reflect an emerging concept of the “fallen” goddess.

The longest Gnostic aretalogy appears in Thunder, Perfect Mind (originally titled The Divine Barbelo). It follows the form of the old Isis litanies: “I am the wisdom of the Greeks / And the knowledge of the barbarians / I am one whose image is great in Egypt…” Unlike the aretalogies, however, Thunder is marked by dualism, pairing negatives—“ignorance… shame… fear”—with Barbelo’s divine qualities. [Arthur, 164, 175] Still, it contains verse of remarkable beauty and profundity:

I am the first and the last
I am the honored one and the scorned one
I am the whore and the holy one
I am the wife and the virgin
I am the mother and the daughter
I am the members of my mother
I am the barren one, and many are her sons….
I am the silence that is incomprehensible
And the idea whose remembrance is frequent
And the word whose appearance is multiple
I am the utterance of my name.

Though Sophia is prominent in the Gnostic creation accounts, she was being stripped of the radiant holiness the Egyptians attributed to Isis and the Hebrews to Khokhmah. In her ground-breaking and all-too-little-known study The Wisdom Goddess, Rose Arthur shows how the positive view of Sophia in the early, pre-christian scriptures was gradually broken down and degraded by a masculinizing, christianizing movement that emphasized a “fallen Sophia.”

Arthur demonstrates that the older texts were consistently reedited to reduce and subordinate female divinity, while exalting the male god. The Hypostasis of the Archons is no more than “a christianized, patriarchalized and defeminized summary of On the Origin of the World.” It blatantly substitutes the christian god for the Gnostic goddess. For example, the line “But all this came to pass according to the Pronoia of Pistis” becomes “But all these things came to pass in the Will of the Father of the All.”

The pre-christian scripture Eugnostos the Blessed was revamped as the Sophia Jesu Christi, in which Sophia rebels against the “Father of the Universe,” repents of her fault, and is saved by her male partner, Jesus Christ. The revisionist text repeatedly refers to the “fault of the woman.” The same process was at work in the Pistis Sophia, where the fallen Sophia is made to sing thirteen hymns of repentence before Jesus helps her to regain the spiritual heights.

These new patriarchal discourses still had to contend with a deep-rooted conviction in the Goddess as the ultimate source of life. Even hostile writers acknowledge that Sophia gives the breath of life to Adam, though they show this happening indirectly. But they view the material creation as evil, imprisoning the souls who live in it. Often Sophia herself is shown falling into bondage.

In one Gnostic myth, Sophia was made prisoner by the seven archons. The essence of Wisdom made flesh in female form was subjected to every indignity, including being forced into whoredom. In one version, Simon Magus rescues “Helena” from a brothel in Tyre. But in actuality she is the creator of the angels who made the world. She is called Kyria, Lady, a Greek term corresponding to the christian god’s title Kyrios. [Allegro, 141-5] These stories don’t refer to idealized notions of sacred harlots making love in freedom, but to female degradation in the prison-brothels of the Roman empire. While they may be taken as an affirmation of the presence of the sacred within the enslaved women, they also demark a clear demotion of the Wisdom goddess, who has lost her original sovereign power.

The earlier view of Goddess as the supreme Source, or alternatively as a male god’s perfect partner, now gave way to the idea that she was a lower being in need of pardon and salvation. New authors developed themes of a deluded and foolish Sophia (contradicting the very meaning of her name, “Wisdom”). They accuse of her of breaking cosmic law by creating without a male partner and describe her creation as defective. [Couliano, 78-9]

While these writers blamed Sophia for conceiving alone, they praise the male god for creating without a partner. In their tellings, Sophia he is cast down and made to suffer and repent until a superior male god deigns to “correct her deficiency.” As Sophia is mythically overthrown, other female figures pick up aspects of her power, but the force of the Gnostic Wisdom goddess is almost spent.

Under the oppressive climate of the Roman empire, with its heavy taxation, displaced populations, urban crowding, plagues, slave economy, and arena executions, to say nothing of pervasive violence against women, a profound negativity had seeped into religious consciousness. People felt like prisoners in the world, and a conviction arose that creation itself was flawed. The taint reached back to the Goddess herself, since she manifested herself in matter, in birth, in bodies.

This new doctrine identifying the female with bondage, weakness, inferiority and fault was the final means of overthrowing the Goddess Mysteries in the Mediterranean. The process was erratic. Judaic Wisdom mysticism, so influential in early Gnosticism, exalted the creative power of Khokhmah, and held that creation was good, even though the female is formally subordinated to the male throughout the Bible. But increasingly Gnostics gravitated toward an “value-inversion,” not only revolting against the Biblical god, but rejecting all creation as well.

Although Gnostics were strongly influenced by Judaism, which features Wisdom as a co-creator, many of their writings evince a strong animus against it. Some emphasize the female creative principle, while others, especially the later texts, demote her. Much of Gnostic scripture reinterprets the biblical creation story, making Yahweh (cast as Ialdabaoth or Saklas or Authades) junior to the creating Wisdom goddess, unaware of her presence but working with her light. Possibly this theme originated as a reassertation of the Goddess (especially she of ten-thousand-names in Egypt) whose scattered signatures are visible in the Gnostic amalgam of Hellenistic, Judaic and Persian cosmologies. Some of these accounts can be read as a defense of her divinity and creative power as against the increasingly influential concept of a masculine god as sole creator.

But the syncretic Goddess of late antiquity was gradually subjected to heavy-handed reinterpretation as Gnostics embraced a heavily polarized doctrine of dualism. Thei rejection of the “lower” world ended up dragging down the Goddess in the midst of its attack on Judaism. It demanded rejection of the body, of lovemaking and the ancient birth mysteries: of Earth and Nature herself. New christian doctrines stripped Sophia of her divine qualities, dramatically subordinating her to the Father and to Christ as her male partner and savior. Later writers dropped the name Sophia altogether. Some introduce new names, but the visible trend is away from myths exalting a creatrix.

The variant picture of the Gnostic scriptures reflects an intense campaign to beat down goddess veneration and to split body and spirit. The tension is more open in the Gnostic gospels precisely because the female divinity is still powerful, in contrast to the christian canon. It was in Egypt and other centers of the Mysteries that the last stand for open Goddess worship was fought — and ultimately lost — on the battleground of Gnosticism.

Eradicating the Goddess proved to be an impossible task. She survived in myriads of forms in popular belief, veiled as Mary or christian saints. The Virgin Mary occupied a much less powerful position in church doctrine and scriptures than the old pagan Goddess. Folk tradition is another story; there devotion shifted to Mary from the old goddesses and persisted over centuries as new ethnicities entered christendom. Due to this popular pressure and the role it played in the clergy’s conversion strategy, Mary escaped the degradation that Gnostic christians ended up heaping on Sophia, and the stigma that theologians cast over Eve. Catholicism ended up absorbing goddess traditions over the centuries, through progressive engorgements, while Gnosticism gradually shed them.

But the story of Sophia does not end there. Her Greek worshippers succeeded in assimilating her to Orthodox christianity, as Hagia Sophia. The greatest cathedral of the Byzantines was raised in honor of this “Holy Wisdom,” supported by the great porphyry pillars taken from the Ephesian temple of Artemis. The early Orthodox Greeks regarded Hagia Sophia as a female member of the Trinity, the “Holy Spirit.” This strand persisted in Orthodox Christian mysticism, and is still a force in Russian spirituality. Western Christian feminists have also reclaimed it in recent decades.

This title of “Holy Spirit” also belonged to Ruha d’Qudsha, the goddess of the Iraqi Mandaeans. She had been demonized by the Christian era, but she is an Aramaean analogue to the Hebrew Shekhinah: compare Biblical ruach, “spirit” and qadoshah, “holy,” and remember, too, the ancient Canaanite-Egyptian goddess QDSU or Qudsha. The Aramaean goddess undergoes the same debasement in Syria and northern Iraq as Sophia had in the eastern Mediterranean. Ruha d’Qudsha, as mother of the “evil” planets and zodiac spirits, is another fallen, or rather toppled, goddess. She is called deficient and defective, and must be uplifted and guided by the Father.

The Torah uses the word “hovering,” as with beating wings, to describe the divine Presence that Talmudic writers had begun to call the Shekhinah. Her image resonates with the ancient veneration of doves as sacred to Canaanite, Syrian, and Cypriot goddesses. Christians adopted this imagery, picturing the Holy Spirit as a winged radiance and a hovering dove. She flutters above Mary in innumerable scenes of the Annunciation, and above the consecrated chalice and bread.

As for Khokhmah, she remained a presence within the Hebrew Scriptures. Thousands of years after her praises were embedded in the Book of Proverbs, medieval christian mystics were attracted to this female image of Wisdom. Hildegarde of Bingen knew her as Sophia, Scientia Dei, and Sapientia of the seven pillars. One of her manuscripts even shows her wearing the mural crown of the ancient goddess of Asia Minor. Hildegarde’s profoundly animistic poetry sings the praises of Life endowed with Wisdom, as a goddess in all but name:

I am that supreme and fiery force that sends forth all living sparks. Death hath no part in me, yet I bestow death, wherefore I am girt about with Wisdom as with wings. I am that living and fiery essence of the divine substance that glows in the beauty of the fields, and in the shining water, and in the burning sun and the moon and the stars, and in the force of the invisible wind, the breath of all living things, I breathe in the green grass and the flowers, and in the living waters…

Gnostic Goddess, Female Power and the Fallen Sophia

I haven’t read it myself yet but after skimming can see that it includes references to the other cradle of civilization e.g.:

Gnostics believed in the growth and perfectibility of the soul over countless lifetimes. They sought to progress through meditation, chanting, retreats to the wilderness, austerities, the praise of silence. Modern scholars remark on the similarities to Hinduism or Buddhism, something that the ancients recognized. Around the year 225, Hippolytus named the “brahmins” as an influence on Gnosticism, citing vegetarianism, the concept of god as light, and adepts wise in Nature’s mysteries.

Pistis retorts, “You are wrong, Samael [blind god]… there is an immortal light man that exists before you.” (Here Neoplatonism surfaces in the mix of traditions.) The god later realizes the truth of her words when he glimpses her image on the water, and he repents. [Origin of the World, online] This story is repeated by Irenaeus in his description of Ophite cosmology; there, when Ialdabaoth proclaims himself sole god, Sophia shouts, “Do not lie!” [Doresse, 38] A similar counter narrative appears in a Buddhist critique of Hinduism, where Brahma imagines that he is the creator. Saturn and Kali or Ka & L

I’ve written about Father Time/Grim Reaper going back to Mother Time and hence the Dark Mother, the world has seen her in many forms, a prehistoric goddess and the oldest living version is Kali (Black, Time – and carrier of many weapons but the sickle one of staples) from old Hinduism (modern Hinduism to me being Vedic Hinduism aka from approx 1500BC.) I’ve also written about the feminine triad predating the masculine triads we see from/following the cradles of civilization ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and India. I tend to refer to the Indian side of things most because their customs/beliefs/knowledge is still living, twisted and morphed over time, but still there so for me it’s easier to see the changes.

The feminine triad came from Lalita who split into three major forms; Bala, Lalita and Kali. The Daughter, the Mother and the Dark [grand]Mother/Crone. Lalita is seen as the ultimate Mother Goddess/cosmic Mother who in texts that aren’t so popular even the current pantheon admit pre-dates and is more powerful than them. I found Valdimir Nabokov’s book ‘Lolita’ to be a poignant version of this (and not romantic at all as many think it, but probably wouldn’t if it was them/their daughter) and how they took over the Earth, but in a personalized/individual rather than cosmic form.

Shortened versions of Lalita is Lal or L and in later religions people have highlighted the ‘el’ (Mum has had people say ‘elle’ to her as well – her name being Lalita). ‘El’ is both significant and frequent in the later triad of dominant world religion – Judaism, Islam and Christianity but it is usually in plural form.

Going back to Kali/Kala/Kalika though, given the spread of Indo-European languages from the India side of the Indus (and pushing aside languages already in India such as Tamil) we can see the use of Kal in many places. For example Cailleach of the Gaelic Scottish Celts (pronounced Kall-yack) whose name means ‘old woman’ and commonly ‘hag’ or ‘crone’ both of those terms associated with magic/being a witch and being a ‘dark mother’. Cailleach was/is a Mother Goddess figure. (On a sidenote Ireland had a goddess called Brigid – a number of spellings – who was later incorporated as one of the Christian saints.)

California after the Spanish story of Calafia/Califia a warrior queen of Black women is another interesting one, though bear in mind being Spanish it is a later version and significantly that story includes the use of her in the war between Islam and Christianity. Also California’s flag has a dark/Black bear (remember the bear is one of the oldest symbols of Mother Goddess) and a pentagram. Later there was the establishment of the Golden Gate Bridge and Los Angeles with its Holy Holly Wood (remember witches don’t need/have wands, it’s a phallic symbol).

Where does Saturn fit into this?

Saturn is the planet represented by Kali which makes sense since she is Mother Time. In later religion it became Kronos/Chronos and was most widely known with Graeco-Roman religion(s) (pre-Roman Catholic & Christian period but remember that he was a titan so harking back to an older race, pre-dating the Greek gods who conquered them). If you’ve seen masonic artwork of the zodiac often found in divination books (and to some freemasonic symbolism is also called ‘alchemy’) you’ve probably seen pictures of the gods in front of their representative planet and with other symbols around them. For some reason none of those are coming up in image searches I’ve been doing but here’s an interesting yet simplistic one:

Chronos was both the ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius but that changed later on with Uranus taking Aquaman. The water bearer Aquarius used to just be a vase pouring water (over to Pisces) in both old Greek and Hindu zodiacs (potentially confusing for the Hindus given their girls and women carry very heavy clay pots of water on their heads short and long distance, and could break their necks but like Chronos, Capricorn/Baphomet and the rest the water bearer became male even though the job is considered too low for them).

I saw similar when researching my star sign Capricorn, whose ruler is Saturn (and whose day is Saturday) and who is represented by the Devil (commonly signifying materialism and base desires) in the tarot cards, the Devil being the goat headed satyr Baphomet with the circled pentagram. (Baphomet, one of the names being ‘Black Goat’, has very interesting symbolism and history of worship too going back to the Knights Templar, Baphomet being a Dark Goddess. Remember going back further Kali is one of the Mahavidyas or Dasha Vidyas, the Mahavidyas being 9 forms and the Dahsa being 10 since it counts the bigger unsplit form. This was long before the ‘Satan’ and the ‘Nine Angels’ connection which people jump to immediately and remember ‘Satan’ is from the Muslim word ‘Shaytan’ meaning a class of jinn-smokeless fire beings.) Interestingly Capricorn isn’t a regular goat, it’s a sea-goat – part land/part water animal and the water part being magical/mythical. The significance of water beings on this water planet Earth is something I might go into in a later post.

Saturn (and the other planets/stars) have come a long way from their goddess associations, Saturn’s Mother Goddess being the fiercest, most protective, most aware/punisher of injustice Kali Maa who has sadly become the object of many people’s (and Shiv’s) desires for her near nudity, blood and raw power. ‘The blood is the life’ goes the well-known phrase particularly menstrual blood despite it’s taboo is modern religions making women dirty and even evil, untouchable, not allowed to pray, go in ‘houses of god’, touch men even shake hands etc yet modern Hindu statues that apparently bleed are revered in the utmost and the red/pink (or ash) marks on the head of people symbolize that though ironically the coloured powder for women is made of toxic substances and the men’s one not. And it’s not just the blood – it’s the electricity – including the spinal chakra electricity (later called ‘serpent’) of kundalini, something some people are scared of and so call evil, and the creative energy nowadays known as sexual energy. More specifically when it becomes reproductive in sexual intercourse. Remember that in Earth root cultures – pre-modern Hinduism (and incorporated/twisted into it) – there is a focus on feminine androgyny i.e. asexuality and being able to self-produce, and how those who came to this planet on sailboats (possibly space ships) raped the dark woman with dark curly hair of the Earth by controlling her sexuality and making her frenzied and thereby taking over and made the ‘original feminine’ into a vessel and all her children as part of their school (like fish). Again another subject for another day.

One of misconceptions that I really dislike about the Kali-Saturn connection is that is brings up the later Shiv connection, the later god whom now Kali is apparently an ‘aspect’ of and so sexually enamoured with that she wants his creative juices even after she kills him. Her killing of demons is something she apparently enjoys (rather than just being furious at and sickened by, especially after witnessing her children/creations hurt and a popular sin is to rape females in front of Mother Goddess statues/in their templates to show the Mother Goddess means nothing, is nothing and has no power) and then takes part in necrophilia with his penis being portrayed on a mighty scale. This ‘frenzy’ is something that comes with modern Hinduism. Shiv and his pantheon being the usurpers means that he then became the Creator Destroyer, the Lord of the Dance (and lover/participant of wrestling), the Black One instead of her (even the mass statues of his penis which is prayed to separately to whole statues of him is coloured Black and significant in Islam too as a cornerstone of their religion that they revere and housed in Mecca the Black cube). It’s ironic because when I first heard about CERN proposing to build the LHC in search of/to prove the existence of the Higgs Boson aka the ‘God Particle’ I read up on said particle and even from the basic descriptions/rudimentary maths of its spin/movement I thought to myself in horrified surprise “they’re trying to build a portal for him”. The door/portal bit made sense to me but the ‘him’ being Shiv was a strange thought because anyone who knows religion/culture knows he doesn’t need a portal, he and his ilk are already here and took up residence in the Himalayas (though bear in mind it’s also a/awaiting punishment to be trapped in and under mountains) (the reason why I thought of him is one I’ll unlikely go into). At the grand LHC unveiling though, what was standing there – a donated statue of Shiv from India. I’m not sure if it really has anything to do with the God particle or Shiv but the laser like spirals they’ve unleashed into the sky worry people.

Now the ‘Saturn Cult’ as many researchers religion, freemasonry, myth and history call it is something very cruel and sinister, the victimizer rather than the slayer of the victimizer. It’s taken the blackness and morphed it into Black/dark = fear and evil, taken the natural wild/natural nudity and made it into both erotica and shame which leads to the taking the reproductive/creative of ability of blood and electricity and made it into rampant, uncontrolled and forced sexuality i.e. rape/sex abuse/prostitution/sexual murder/ritualistic abuse and vampirism/blood drinking.

There are many ‘Black’ associations in Freemasonry (although there are many ‘White’ too for the light and dark, good vs evil theatre where they play all sides and even switch back and forth e.g. the checkerboard pattern) – but the one most important here being the Black Sun. Some see that as the occult in general – the hidden – and esoteric, but it sounds more specific than that and perhaps indicates Dark Star instead.

I’ve never really thought that the sky was ‘right’ – there’s something very unreal about it me. I’ve also never been able to ‘get’ the constellations – it should be like cloud watching with someone and saying ‘hey look there’s a _____’ and then the person with you goes ‘oh yeah I see it’, perhaps they squint a bit first but it’s not too hard to imagine. Constellations though don’t even look like what they’re ‘supposed’ even when you look at the join-the-dot diagrams and even less so when the detailed drawings of the characters are superimposed. In my last post I mentioned that I always imagined the sky as sunset/sunrise (dawn/dusk) rather than Blue and cloudy and then I found similar thoughts in other cultures leading upto the ‘twilight’ description in a recent (very well written) fiction fantasy book. Part of my annoyance with ‘landmarks’ in the sky/outer space might be because people generally see them as stagnant akin to the stationary models of the solar system we’re taught with which implies all the bodies are lined up and moving together in the same direction, not taking into account that the whole system is an orbit too.

Seriously who sees that shape without needing someone to draw/map it and point it out to them?

My ‘issue’ is that I’m interested in both the physical and the mystical/mythological side of things but I haven’t been able to explain my uncertainty about the symbolism of Saturn with the physical. Mum sees it more metaphysically – she’s better able to personify and empathise with the objects in space – whereas I look at the sky and don’t really feel anything, not even awe. I used to be able to really focus on the sun for example, to the point of it being ‘living’ in a sense with ‘beings’ and geometry inside. Nowadays when I try to concentrate on sol images of water pop into my mind and push me off that train of thought. So far I’ve been unable to verbalise to Mum why there may be more to the planets than just mythology and regular science/astronomy. However this video, an interview with Troy McLachlan on Red Ice Radio helps. I don’t agree with all of it but it got both of us thinking (and I’m glad he talks about the sky being different now to how it was which is a major factor I find it hard to explain to people into the mythological side, although it’s easier when talking about megaliths which he does too):

Sidenote – modern cultural examples of seemingly friendly iconic fusion of outer space ‘divine’ with Earth into ultra masculinity and the use of Mother Goddess terms is Superman or Kal-El with the use of Lalita’s Red (name means ‘Red’ and ‘joy’) with Earth Blue. Supergirl and Superwoman (and even Superdog) came later as a kind of afterthought or perhaps from a side of rib. A bit like She-Ra (Ra-ja Ra-jeshvari another name of Lalita, and means ‘king of kings’ feminine terms but nowadays thought of as masculine, also many of the male god names are taken/added from female names, She-Ra is the ‘princess of power’ whereas He-Man doesn’t have that equivalent title though both are called the strongest woman and man), He-Man’s supposed twin sister but she had far more powers, a god-name and in her non-super form wore Red whilst he wore Purple/Pink (the fusion of Red/Blue and the dilution of Red). The Dark Goddess in that cartoon could arguably be both sorceresses, one a birdwoman who lives in a skull, and one shadow who works for a Blue skinned techno-skeleton who lives in a bone castle and whose apprentice was another skeleton.
