Retrospective Outfit Of The Day – Minimalist Sleek

Morning all!

Oh what a bleary morning it is too, here anyway, my back is sore, my hips are down the drain, got a jaw that’s threatening to swell and dislocate – but that’s all normal. It’s the twitching of the left thumb that’s annoying me a bit *rehashes Alice Cooper’s ‘It’s the little things’ in mind* except of course everything in that song is banned and totally unacceptable, it’s only the chorus I have in mind.

Here’s the pics of an outfit I wore last week but didn’t get round to posting. It features what is called a nautical top by Chicstar but I think of it more as a tuxedo top and as I’m partial to tuxedo styled clothing for women I quite like this top. The deep ‘V’ is on the front and back but the back has buttons on it so I wore it backwards and over a mesh top because the angle makes it quite low cut in places. The shaping is a bit awkward so I kept with the sleek minimalist theme incorporating a metallic belt (which is really a piece of shiny metal on an elasticated strap).

OOTD Retro Boho

Top ‘o the morning to ye!

(Well it was morning when I took the pics and it’s still morning to many of the readers!)

The weather has been pretty grizzly lately and so I decided to give myself a mood boost with a bit of colour and a flashback to a real retro boho look. Remember when all the girls were wearing a long top/jumper/dress over fitted trousers or leggings, optional waistcoat and brightly coloured plastic jewellery? Yep that was the 80’s and early 90’s in full bloom; I decided to take it back a bit further with chunky exotic jewellery and my version of a beehive to give the outfit a 70’s vibe as well.

The end result?

New Fashion Swing Dress Designs

These are my new designs for the fashion design competition at Chicstar.com. They have always favoured dresses and particularly of late rockabilly and swing/full skirted/sweep dresses so I made one general shape and added variations in colour and print. It’s a smart yet fun dress. Anyone can look at the competition entries on their website and members can submit designs, vote and wishlist them. Additionally, verified members (paypal address needed) can comment and bid on both design auctions and prototype auctions.

Note:
There are two types of design on Chicstar, original designs and alterations of designs that they have already made. Design auctions only take place on alterations.

Design auctions are where verified members conditionally bid on designs. When the auction is over Chicstar chooses which designs they will Accept to make into prototypes. Only the winning bidders on those Accepted auctions have to pay.

Prototype auctions are all ‘real’ auctions that take place when prototypes (of both Accepted original and altered designs) are available.

New Designs – Trousers/Pants Galore!

‘Tis been an age since I submitted any designs to the Chicstar fashion design competition and I decided that since every line of pants they are still selling are discontinued stock I should submit some new ones. Truth be told pants barely ever score well on Chicstar but they are necessary and so many of us wear them. Dresses and skirts are lovely but pants are so much more practical and just as flattering. Hence I submitted the following designs; some have finished scoring (the voting period is 15 days) and some are still being voted on but I thought I’d post them altogether here as I don’t know if/when I’ll get around to other designs.

OOTD – Retro Polka Dots!

Ok so today I am paying homage to spots, glorious spots – the fabric print kind not the skin kind 😉

I thought I’d go ‘all out’ (for me anyway) and wear some funky retro sunglasses with them which I bought as a novelty ages ago and never got round to wearing. My face shape is more suited to cat shaped shades but I had wanted more space age style rounded glasses at the time and having found they didn’t suit me as much I a bit disappointed and left these in a drawer for a while. But I finally decided, cat eye glasses aren’t that embarrassing and I’ll wear them regardless!

Retro Black White Polka Dot Spot Sunglasses Halter Top Wrap Skirt

Retro Black White Polka Dot Spot Sunglasses Halter Top Wrap Skirt

Retro Black White Polka Dot Spot Sunglasses Halter Top Wrap Skirt

The glasses are a market stall buy (yes I love markets whether food, fashion, antique etc they are awesome), the polka halter top is from Chicstar.com, the skirt was a charity/thrift store find being Versace made in lined and draped chiffon. I consistently donate excellent unworn and pre-loved items to charity shops and know they have fabulous clothes in them at affordable prices and this is probably the only non-vintage high fashion branded item I own and would consent to wearing because it was bought from a charity shop and because my go-to Black wrap skirt that I’d been wearing for about 15 years had finally been laid to rest (RIP) and I couldn’t find another on short notice anywhere that suited me, otherwise I tend to steer clear of the big and luxury names. For example I particularly disliked some of the Versace for H&M advertising where they showed a model as if she was a clone on a production line and in very disorientating situations, everything was careful controlled and manipulated like puppetry – I really didn’t like what that could have been implying of the target audience. Moving on – I don’t remember where I bought the bolero from but it was probably eBay ha!

Hope you liked the pics!

Retrospective OOTD – Dapper Dolly?

Salut!

This post features the pics that formed the basis of my new blog theme so for once I quite like them 😛

I was going for a sharp yet sweet look and using one of my favourite colour combinations – Black and Pink, usually Fuschia/Hot Pink but quite frankly any shade will do except Puce.

Yes I’m wearing a short skirt here – something I rarely, very rarely, less than once in Blue moon do and can count the times on one hand but I was doing a bare midriff set which was even more unlikely so I thought ‘what they heck’.

The outfit as usual is a mix and match from various places. The tuxedo jacket being from Chicstar.com, the skirt a relic from Topshop that I bought in my teenage days and never wore, the waistcoat (in the first pic – though unfortunately quickly became too warm to wear) a reduced item from Principles, the shirt from a local discount boutique, the tights from a market stall (excellent buy and thanks mum for buying them I love them!) and the hat & tie from good ol’ eBay.

Outfits of the Day and Night

I’ve had a busy day and am a bit knacked so I’m posting these quickly otherwise who knows when/if I’ll get round to it.

Day

Red Gold Leopard Animal Print OOTD

Night

Denim Jean Dress Jacket

For the day outfit I went for classic Red and leopard print but since animal prints are usually associated with sex appeal I decided to go for a cuter ‘prim’ look, almost like a vintage college student. The skirt is from chicstar for $29.95 and the tops were second hand.

For the evening something a little hotter, I haven’t worn a denim dress in ages so I paired it with my favourite denim jacket and voila. The dress is from chicstar for $19.95 and the jacket from eBay.

Hope you liked them!

Denim and Patterns

‘Ello ‘Ello!

A few days ago I wore these great looking pair of jeans/denim pants that have Black/White stripe pockets and accents which make them quite striking but not overwhelming. I generally have a hard time finding and wearing jeans and unfortunately I found with these I should have ordered a size up because they were not as stretchy as I thought they might be. They still fit but I had to wear them quite low for comfort and will wear them at times when I’ve lost weight.

I wore them with a short sleeved Black jumper that has dogtooth patterned trim and pockets, over a long sleeved Black polo/turtle neck and I believe they matched the trousers nicely. To top the outfit off I wanted to give it even more texture(!) and so wore a faux fur hat to give the outfit a colder weather feel too. I hope you like the pics!

The first pic is also my latest fashion/customer photo entry for Chicstar Competition 3 – posting a pic of yourself or someone you know wearing an item of Chicstar clothing. It’s a great way of getting discounted clothing, it can be fun and it’s also nice to see the clothing on different people.

227 Retro TV Show – Dowdy to Dayum

227-logo

227 was one of the spin-offs from one of my favourite tv shows (‘The Jeffersons’ – itself a spin off from ‘All in the Family’) starring Marla Gibbs in a sitcom about four ladies and their families living in the same apartment building going through their every day lives together with plenty of wit, sass and comedy. The show also featured Jackée Harry (Sister, Sister) Alaina Reed Hall (Sesame Street) and Helen Martin (more of a stage actress) in a similar foursome to The Golden Girls which was airing at the same time. Guest stars included The Temptations, Billy Dee Williams (always charming), Pee Wee Herman and Gary Coleman.

227 was the name/number of the apartment building in which the ladies lived, muddled and got into trouble in and was home to their many varied outfits. That’s one of the things I liked about the show fashion-wise, it showed everyday women in daywear they wouldn’t want others to see to their dressed to the nine’s outfits and no matter what the occasion be it doing the laundry to lavish parties their attire was appropriate (until the later seasons where Jackée aka Sandra constantly had her cleavage on show). Leaving little to the imagination does exactly that and complacency soon follows.

1_227_Mary_Black_Pants_Jumpsuit_Oriental_Wrap_Jacket

Jumpsuits are a bit of a hit and miss, they fleetingly come back into high fashion but never really win over the masses, not since the 70s/80s anyway. Here Mary shows how to make one appear at the height of chic with a bold print sheer wrap jacket and matching accessories.

2_227_Fran_Dresher_Fine_Sandra_Power_80s_Retro_Business_Suit_Blue_Dress_Pink_Feather_Boa

It’s Fran! We all know Fran for her ‘quirky’ laugh but Sandra was demonstrating her own before The Nanny. Ignoring Sandra’s outfit, the fringed outfit on the left and the Pink fuzz on the right (and masses of Pink in general), ‘Fran’ (Sandra’s boss) did the ‘masculine’ look very well with slicked back hair, big shoulders and straight leg pants. She looks just as good now decades later… how?!

4_227_Rose_Sandra_Mary_Black_Ruffle_Puff_Sleeve_Dress

LtR: Rose, Sandra, Mary. As usual Sandra brought the glamour, whilst the ladies sat on the stoop catching up Sandra would often make her entrance and a few put downs would ensue. Here Rose and Mary are in their homewear whilst Sandra looks high class and ready for a funeral, seriously.

5_227_Lester_Sandra_Mary_Red_Satin_Peplum_Dress_Faux_Fur_Jacket_Diamante_Necklace

Peplums do good things for us ladies! Here’s Sandra at a reading of a will, overdone (ya think?) but smokin’ hot in her bright Red dress, faux fur (I hope) jacket and of course… the statement necklace. I saw a heck of a lot of accessories in this show, particularly statement necklaces and earrings, no matter how plain the outfit the shortfall was made up for with jewellery and a fine line between chic and gaudy.

6_227_Mary_Sandra_Teal_Green_Satin_Camisole_Lace_Negligee

I have a thing for vintage nightwear and Sandra’s Teal lace trimmed camisole speaks to me. You can’t really see it well here but she’s also wearing a flowing housecoat that could be worn outside too and as per usual on 227, the contrast in character costumes is emphasized by Mary wearing a very modest house dress.

7_227_Sandra_Blue_Black_Polka_Dot_Spot_Peplum_Knee_Dress

Sandra, again, being a show stopper. I remember dresses like this from the 80’s that were over designed – in this case the marriage of shiny, slinky fabric with two sets of polka dots, peplum and shoulder pads made a killer dress that would literally kill a lot of women but Sandra and her sashay made it work… even with that necklace. I think to have wider appeal the dress would have to lose all the polka or at least one set and in smaller, subtle spots. The dress would also be better in a neutral or pastel shade, no shoulder pads and lose the necklace.

9_227_Mary_Dusky_Rose_Pink_Cream_Contrast_Dress-Flawless-Chic

Mary looking super chic. This style is often associated with women in their 40’s and above but I think it would work with the younger ladies and lasses as well. I’d love this dress, either in that cute White/Dusky Pink combination (and I’m not usually a fan of that shade of Pink) or Black/White which would be very striking. With the right shoes, hat and perhaps glasses and gloves it’d be very Audrey Hepburn and that extra fabric on the left shoulder would be great for flicking and making a high strung exit ;). That is also one of the better necklaces imo.

10_227_Rose_Mary_Sandra_Pink_Fuschia_Ruffles_Bell_Sleeve_Blouse_Chiffon

Most people would find it a challenge to pull off that many frills and ruffles especially in such a bold colour let alone with fuller cleavage… the blouse Sandra is wearing kinda calls out ‘Ship ahoyyy!’ But of course, Sandra makes it work and at least it’s well balanced with the jet Black belt and long skirt.

11_227_Rose_Blue_Retro_Dress_Vintage_Black_Inserts

The viewers didn’t often see Rose dressed up for the evening but when she did she was always stunning and even though she’s carrying a laundry basket here she was ready for her date afterwards! The only problem here is fabric – the vintage inspired dress with inserts in the skirt is all well and good but the pleather doesn’t go well with the Blue fabric and looser upper body and rolled neck. The stylist pulled it together with the Black scarf and brooch though, I never would have thought of those and I’m not sure if I’d try them but they work…

12_227_Mary_Winter_Wear_Cardigan_Scraf_Hat

I love this look, especially since it feels like it’s been cold for ages where I am! The long cardigan, fitted hat and wide scarf with gloves (hopefully faux) make for a sophisticated look and in matching colours.

13_227_Green_Pussy_Bow_Blouse_Grey_Flared_Skirt_Faux_Pleather_Boots

Pussy bow blouses/shirts always look even more feminine when matched with a flared skirt and even more smart with knee high boots. I know not many women like to wear a skirt that covers the top of their knee high boots but I’ve done it a few times and it doesn’t look or feel awkward.

14_227_Sandra_Pink_Red_Marabou_Maribu_Maribou_Peignoir_Dressing

These are a bit too glam for me but the vintage marabou peignoirs are mega expensive! Do you have a boudoir worthy of this negligee?

15_227_Sandra_Calvin_Snazzy_Suit

Calvin looking very snazzy but I’m not sure if it’d fly in those colours nowadays.

16_227_Sandra_Pink_Vintage_Peignoir_Dressing_Gown_Mary

Another starlet peignoir but I’m not liking that shade of Pink with the faux fur trim and flared back.

17_227_Rose_Plaid_Check_Purple_Skirt_Blazer_Suit

I’m not sure about this suit, it’s in a nice colour scheme and is smart yet different but it’s a bit too mature. If the plaid/check fabric was more stiff or more iron friendly and the cut better fitted it could suit women of all ages for both work and street wear.

18_227_Sandra_Pink_Ruffle_Shiny_Blouse_Black_Skirt

Again, statement shirtfronts work well with a long flared skirt and in this case with a nice belt.

19_227_Pearl_Purple_Shiny_Chiffon_Suit

Pearl looking lovely in Purple with costume pearls and a little bit of shine. A little shine on a muted shade works well on the chiffon particularly on a mature lady.

20_227_Mary_Wedding_Attire_Skirt_Dress_Suit_Pink

Perfect Mother-of-the-Bride attire worn by both except in this case Mary is the daughter and on the right hand side her mother is dressed for renewing her vows. Elegant to a ‘t’.

21_227_Sandra_Mary_Blue_Peplum_Dress_Hot_Pink_Black

Sandra stealing the show again, this time in a Royal Blue peplum faux wrapover dress. Again though, all that shine and slink was more suited to Dynasty and Dallas but Sandra was just as over the top.

22_227_Mary_Turquoise_Dress_Gold_Accessories_Sandra_Black

A rare occasion where Mary looks better dressed than Sandra imo. Both look smart and chic but Mary’s Turquoise/Gold combo in a casual yet smart jumper dress stands out a bit more than Sandra’s Black and sparkly combination, particularly because the dropped waist both are wearing suits Mary’s figure more.

23_227_Mary_Sandra_Rose_Pink_Dress_Belt_Pumps

On the ‘stoop’ stylin’ as usual, all are work ready but Sandra’s Pink dress and belt are gorgeous.

Fashions that thankfully got lost en retro

a_227_Rose_Mary_Day_Work_Dress_Plaid_Shirt

As comfortable as they are those work dresses have always been awful and should never come back.

b_227_Rose_Sandra_Mary_Rose_Day_Work_Wear

I see so many of those slinky button-up full dresses with stifling prints, akin to the one Sandra is wearing, in vintage stores and they never grow on me. Sandra makes it looks better than it is but still it’s a basic design that should have always been a rare and not protected species. Mary is again wearing one of her signature work/cleaning dresses that weren’t practical for major housework and designed to ensure the woman wearing it looked modest in means and status.

8_Rose_Sandra_Mens_Clothes

Dressing like your dad… ’nuff said.

3_227_Mary_Green_Print_Retro_Black_Dress_Skirt_Suit

I’ve seen dresses like these in thrift stores galore and they are perfect for re-fashioning because of all the features; in this case the cut/fit, print, shoulder pads, puff sleeves and length of the bodice – sooo many things that call out for alteration. Mary makes it easier on the eye with her pizzazz but otherwise hell no.

Did any of those take you down memory lane or perhaps make you glad you were born afterwards? 😀
